The Public Prosecution in Alexandria received a medical report issued by Abbasiya Mental Health Hospital regarding the defendant behind the massacre in Karmouz which saw six people killed.
The report concluded that the defendant suffered from a severe mental disorder, lacked awareness at the time of the crime and was not responsible for his actions.
The Public Prosecution decided to keep the defendant at Abbasiya Hospital pending the closure of the investigation, and shelved the case.
The prosecution had previously ordered the defendant’s admission to Abbasiya Hospital to assess his mental and psychological state.
A gruesome crime
This comes after the suspect was accused of murdering his mother and five siblings in their apartment in Bashayer al-Kheir, at Karmouz area, Alexandria.
The accused was apprehended before he could take his own life by jumping from the 13th floor. He was rescued by residents and found to have sustained several injuries.
The prosecution heard the defendant’s statement, in which he explained how he committed the crime.
The turning point, he said, was when his father phoned his mother to announce he had divorced her to marry another woman, and had ceased all financial support.
He indicated that his mother, reportedly suffering from cancer, fell into a deep depression and conspired with him to end the family’s life, fearing she would die from her illness and leave them destitute.
