HGTV star Tarek El Moussa is getting candid about his 2016 separation and subsequent 2018 divorce from his first wife and former Flip or Flop co-host, Christina Haack.
On September 23, Tarek took to his Instagram account to share some insight into what led to his divorce from Haack, the mother of his two eldest children, Taylor, 16, and Brayden, 11.
“I was happily married to Christina for about seven years, and then my whole world came crashing down. At the time, I thought I was just living the dream. I had a beautiful family, a thriving business, a TV career that was absolutely taking off, but behind all the glam, and all the cameras, and all the fans, I was suffering with my health,” said Tarek in his Instagram video.
He then explained that he had battled “two different cancers,” thyroid and testicular, and had gone “through an awful back surgery.” Tarek also said while trying “to get [his] energy back,” he “eventually turned to testosterone injections, but things got worse.”
“I lost touch with myself. My marriage fell apart, like many do, and it forced me to take a look in the mirror and take responsibility for a lot of the s–t that I did and what I wanted to become. And, you know, the first step in that is becoming healthy,” said Tarek, who has been married to his second wife, Heather Rae El Moussa, since 2021.
Tarek, who shares a 3-year-old son named Tristan with Heather Rae, said he decided to “check [himself] into a facility,” where he was able to better “[his] mental and [his] physical health.”
“It was a halfway house. But it was the help I needed. Fixed my eating habits and slowly gained my strength back. And that leads me to today. Today I am a father, a happy husband, and part of a huge modern family that I’m just incredibly grateful for,” said the Flip Off star, seemingly in reference to his friendly dynamic with Haack and her 7-year-old son, Hudson, fathered by her second ex-husband, Ant Anstead.
He then encouraged those who may be struggling to take the steps to “rebuild your life,” like he did.
“We can all use a remodel,” concluded the 45-year-old real estate investor.
