The legendary Indian playback singer, Asha Bhosle, passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, April 12. She was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, and was being treated for an infection. While she was said to recover fast, she breathed her last due to multiple organ failure. While her death comes as a big loss for the country, it’s a loss for the Indian cricket community as well. She was closely associated with Indian cricket and even sang a song with former Australian cricketer and legendary bowler Brett Lee.

In what was said to be a crossover of ages, Lee, who is a part of a rock band ‘Six & Out’, recorded a song alongside the legendary playback singer titled ‘You’re the one for me’. Sung partly in English and majorly in Hindi, the Aussie cricketer sang Hindi lines like, “Haan, main tumhara hu, tumhara hi rahunga” with the tune on his guitar. The song was recorded in 2006 during the Champions Trophy, when Lee was aged 49, whereas Asha Bhosle was in her 70s.

But years later, in 2011, Lee, in his autobiography, recalled his experience, sharing the set with the Indian legend and honouring her as the “Aretha Franklin of Indian music”. “She is a lovely, gentlewoman with a wonderful sense of humour. What a tremendous opportunity to work with an absolute legend. She was in her 70s and had sung thousands of songs for Bollywood movies and had countless albums. She was the Aretha Franklin of Indian music,” he wrote.

Aretha Franklin was a singer, songwriter, pianist and social activist from Tennessee, USA. She was hailed for her soulful voice like Asha Bhosle.

The song became a hit on its release. Brett Lee also shared his experience working with the Indian music legend. “I had great fun. I didn’t tell any of my teammates what I was up to; when I went to shoot, I told them I was just going for a look through the streets. Four months after that whirlwind recording experience, I caught up with Asha when she visited Sydney to perform at the Opera House. She gave me her compilation album with a personally signed message. It will always be one of my treasures,” Lee wrote, recalling one of the incidents.
