The Blackhawks host the St. Louis Blues this afternoon, but that amounts to a game that likely won’t change the Blackhawks’ draft lottery odds. So we’re going to focus our Saturday bullets with some thoughts from the Blackhawks Hall of Fame ceremony before this year’s inductees are celebrated before and during this afternoon’s game.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) April 10, 2026 After yesterday’s practice and before the ceremony, I asked current Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill what it meant to be able to have the young group they have on the ice now experience moments like this around the history of the Blackhawks.“Those are examples of what it’s like when you win and how important it is and how revered you are,” he said. “We’ve had multiple of those this year because it’s the 100th anniversary, because Jonathan Toews came back, all those moments have been great. It’s one thing to be a guy who puts up points or whatever, it’s another thing to be a guy who brings winning to a city like this. I think it’s the best sports city in the world and so when you win here, it’s obviously a pretty neat feeling, talking to all the guys who have done that. I think it’s a great thing.”
A little louder for the kids in the back, eh?“It’s one thing to be a guy who puts up points or whatever, it’s another thing to be a guy who brings winning to a city like this.“
On Friday evening, the Blackhawks hosted a tremendous ceremony officially inducting the first class into the team’s Hall of Fame. Among the players with retired jerseys who were inducted, Chris Chelios, Denis Savard and Marián Hossa attended. Family members representing most of the deceased players were there as well. All of them were recognized by a nice collection of fans who were invited to be part of the special night. Pat Foley was the emcee, and he introduced two logical individuals to introduce two of the new inductees. Savard introduced Steve Larmer, with whom he skated (with Al Secord) for most of the 1980s and lit up the Chicago Stadium every night. Then Hossa introduced Duncan Keith, his teammate on three Stanley Cup championship teams. The good news for those in attendance is Larmer and Keith aren’t big speech guys, so the ceremony was over in under an hour. Both of them spoke about their careers and their teammates. But the both also spoke about what it means to represent the Blackhawks — with pointed words for the young men in suits sitting a couple rows away who wear that crest today. The current Blackhawks team was there, and got to see what it means to be a hockey legend in a hockey town. I shared a few photos and videos from the ceremony on our Facebook page. I didn’t mention him yet, but Troy Murray was inducted as a builder. His son, Blake, spoke on his behalf and was absolutely wonderful. It was emotional for a lot of folks there to whom Troy meant so much. I hope Blake and the rest of Troy family felt how much he was loved by the organization and its fans last night. I’m sure they will again later today.bigger than the game pic.twitter.com/sCSzXh8CfG
— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) April 10, 2026 Savard, Larmer and Murray were all drafted together in 1980. Savard in the first round (No. 3 overall), Troy in the third round (No. 57) and Larmer in the sixth round (No. 120). They were teammates for the Blackhawks through most of the 1980s and, together in many ways, defined the Blackhawks to a generation. I’m part of that generation. I included some notes about Troy the player on social media over the past couple days because so many young fans only knew him as the radio voice of the team who heard he was good. He was great. As Pat Foley said last night, he didn’t wear a letter in three cities because he was the best player on those teams. He did it because he led those teams. But let’s not take for granted that Troy Murray was a great hockey player. Wayne Gretzky likely still has nightmares about playing against him (maybe that explains his hair on TNT lately?). In an era with not as many teams in the NHL, there were lots of good hockey players. Troy Murray was a dude. He stood out because of his excellence on the ice.Troy Murray put up 99 points in his Selke Trophy season (1985-86) with the #Blackhawks The players who have produced more points in a Selke season: Doug Gilmour and Sergei Federov (twice). — Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) April 10, 2026 Here’s the media chatting with Larmer after the ceremony. He wouldn’t say it, but I will: his number should be on a banner next to Savard’s next door at the United Center. Take 28 our of circulation. And, hopefully, this honor opens a few new conversations in Toronto about Larmer being a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. He’s well overdue there as well.Ladies and gentlemen, Blackhawks Hall of Famer Steve Larmer pic.twitter.com/ZZXnNQKrcc

— CHGO Blackhawks (@CHGO_Blackhawks) April 10, 2026 Here’s some of what Keith said when asked if the current collection of young Blackhawks defensemen reminds him of his early days in Chicago:“They’ve got a great young group of defensemen. You look at the size of some of these guys and the way they can skate and how young they are. [Artyom] Levshunov is, what, 20 years old? It’s going to take a few years to get that experience and that internal competition to push one another for each other for ice time. I see a lot of similarities with our young group that we had when I started out on this team.
“Everyone pushed one another to become better, and slowly you’re able to add some players. We added [Marian Hossa]. Hopefully they get to a point where they can, here in Chicago, add a piece like that.”
Finally, I miss Troy Murray in the press box still today. And on the broadcasts of games. And in the parking lot after practice, when he’d roll his window down and say something with a wink as he drove past me. He really did represent everything good about the game of hockey on and off the ice to so many people. God bless. It's a shame North Dakota isn't playing for the NCAA championship this weekend Would have made my #Blackhawks heart beat with a little more fervor pic.twitter.com/IvbCFXg7CK
