A man is accused of killing his newborn — a 3-month-old baby girl — who was found not breathing by officers in Virginia, authorities said.
Misael Lopez Gomez, of Bailey Crossroads in Fairfax County, is charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse in connection with his daughter’s death, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
The charges stem from Friday, March 27, when officers received a call about the infant being “unresponsive” in the 3400 block of Lake Street in Bailey’s Crossroads, police said in a Tuesday, March 31, news release.
When officers arrived, they found the baby, who was in Gomez’s care, “not breathing and immediately began CPR until Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and continued life-saving efforts,” authorities said.

The newborn was taken to a hospital and declared dead, according to police.
Detectives and hospital employees suspected the baby had been abused, police said.
An autopsy revealed she died of “blunt force trauma,” according to authorities, who did not release further information on the circumstances leading to her death.
Gomez, 28, was detained at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond, police said.
It was not immediately clear whether Gomez had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Gomez is accused of illegally living in Virginia, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which said in a Wednesday, April 1, news release that he is originally from Guatemala.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement “issued an arrest detainer” and petitioned Virginia officials to keep Gomez behind bars, DHS said.
If he is released, ICE wants to be notified, according to DHS.
“This cold-blooded killer murdered his own three-month-old daughter,” Lauren Bis, the acting assistant secretary of DHS’ public affairs office, said in a statement. “We are calling on Governor [Abigail] Spanberger to commit to not releasing this barbaric animal from jail into Virginia communities.”
Gomez is accused of coming into the U.S. illegally in July 2023, according to DHS.
Authorities have not said when Gomez is due to appear in court.
