ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York is one penny away from hitting $4 a gallon for regular gas, and local drivers are feeling the pinch.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic spoke with drivers today who said they are changing up their life-styles because of increases.
At a Quickless on North Winton Road, where 87 octane costs $3.99 — matching the state average. “Price of oil makes everything going up. I’m feeling it in my groceries, my gas. Trying to back scale on things,” one driver said. When asked what changes they were making, the driver explained they are staying in more and going out less. “I’m eating in more. Save money where I can,” the driver said.
Another driver said they have less flexibility because of their commute. “Unfortunately I have a lot of commuting to do so I can’t change my lifestyle much. And I’d hope I don’t change it just because of the price of gas,” the driver said.
Ed Van Wesep, a professor of finance at the University of Colorado Boulder, explained the domestic gas price comes from the oil price, which is set on world markets. The war with Iran causes the prices to continue rising.
Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s chief petroleum analyst, said he has never seen increases like this before. “It’s very rare to see the scope of price increases. The rate of what we’re seeing now is rare. It’s pretty disconcerting to watch what is happening with no idea if there is going to be any resolution any time soon,” De Haan said.
The Monroe County average has not quite hit $4 yet, but some local stations are already there. Badzic filled up earlier this week for $4.19 in the Greece area. It used to cost $30 to fill up her car and now it’s around $45. So far, the cheapest gas is in the Henrietta area, with BJ’s, Costco and Walmart offering lower prices.
