Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 6, Angels 2 – April 1, 2026 ...Middle East

Now THAT is how you squash concerns about your Opening Day outing, Matthew Boyd.

In case you forgot, the Cubs veteran lefty got off to a nice start on Opening Day (7Ks through 3.0 IP), but got lit up in the fourth and chased with 6ER to his name. But today, with cold and windy conditions again at Wrigley Field, he came to PLAY: 5.2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 2BB, 10K.

And he almost escaped with no earned runs at all, as Hunter Harvey got back-to-back playable(ish) grounders once Boyd left the game in the sixth inning, but the first magically squeaked by Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson, while the second was an actual error from Alex Bregman. Even still, it was a dominant performance from Boyd, who once again recorded an astounding number of whiffs (20). He might be onto something new this year, because the swing and miss is WAY up.

Needless to say, he’s the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game. No question about it.

Offensively, the Cubs had a nice day overall with ten hits and five walks, though pretty much all of the damage came in the third inning. Some of the standout performers were leadoff man Nico Hoerner (3-5, 2 2Bs), first baseman Michael Busch (2-3, BB), and temporary right-fielder Matt Shaw, who came up with a couple of RBIs in key spots.

It was just a very solid win overall, and it happened to give the Cubs their first series win of the year, while bringing them back up to .500 (3-3) overall! Great way to bounce back from a frustrating loss on Tuesday night and ahead of the off-day tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I'll be doing the BN Cubs Podcast with @Brett_A_Taylor. Then I'll be on the @thekapman's show in the afternoon. And finally, I'll be catching up with @RamieIsTweeting on @thescorechicago at 6:40pm CT. Lots of Cubs baseball talk after today's W. Let's GO.
