Sometimes swimming shines on a major sports media stage outside the Olympics, often as a feature on a football broadcast. For the San Jose State team, that opportunity came on Monday Night, where a four-minute feature showcased how star San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner used their pool and coaching to make a remarkable comeback from injury.
Warner’s team, the San Francisco 49ers, played a Monday Night game on ESPN against fellow NFC opponent the Washington Commanders. Before each broadcast, ESPN runs the Monday Night Countdown, a pregame show that highlights the evening’s matchup and features some of the team’s players off the field.
One feature showed Warner using the San Jose State pool to help him return to the field, though his experience in the water wasn’t as strong as his abilities on the field.
The full feature, titled “Sink or Swim,” can be seen below.
We reported on this recovery in the pool back in June, just after Warner was cleared to return to play football.

Warner dislocated his right ankle in October 2025 in a matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This injury required surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the 2025 NFL season, just six weeks in.
Rather than just recovering on land, Warner headed to the water, specifically to San Jose State and coach Hopkins.
There, he quickly progressed, both in his injury recovery and as a swimmer.
In that game Monday night, Warner picked up eight total tackles, six unassisted. This season, Warner ranks 3rd in the NFL with 58 tackles and is tied for the most forced fumbles through six weeks with three.
