Bullpen Saving, Even Out, Busch Love, Team Approach, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The big story from last night’s win was the brilliant Edward Cabrera debut, which is going to have to get its own post here shortly. Until then, the other bullets …

Colin Rea was the only other pitcher for the Cubs last night, with Craig Counsell getting the opportunity to deploy Rea for the three-inning save. Outside of a really bad pitch to Yoan Moncada, Rea was his typically solid-if-unspectacular self. He threw all seven(!) of his pitches at least twice, got seven whiffs on 42 pitches, and even touched 96 mph with the fastball. I’m not sure how realistic it is to hold a guy back for ONLY periodic/unpredictable multi-inning appearances when you have only eight in the bullpen (and when you also might have a second guy in Ben Brown doing the same thing), but it’s easy to see how valuable it is if you can pull it off. Not only did Rea help secure the win, but he also afforded Cabrera the opportunity to sit after six, and rested all of the remaining relievers. It’s a credit not only to Counsell and the Cubs wanting to have a guy like Rea in the bullpen, but also a huge credit to Rea for being able to just kinda do whatever the Cubs ask whenever they ask. Not every pitcher can do it and put up even league-average numbers. Daniel Palencia did have to get up at one point to start getting warm, which, combined with his inning of work in a non-save situation on Sunday, could mean Craig Counsell would prefer not to use him tonight. Sing the song, folks:

— Corey Freedman (@corey_cubs) March 31, 2026 People like to say “it all evens out” when talking about the luck and randomness of baseball, and, while I don’t know that that’s mathematically accurate over a season, those folks do now have a pretty on-the-nose example:

Fun from @WeatherApplied: Remember how Ian Happ lost a home run on Opening Day when the Wrigley wind blew the ball in 113 feet?Well, tonight the wind gave him a home run back by blowing the ball out 35 feet.108.5 mph / 32° on the *non*-HR101.6 mph / 42° on the *yes*-HR pic.twitter.com/9WKVUO8F7U

— David Adler (@_dadler) March 31, 2026 (Of course, if it were FULLY evening out, then Happ would get one blown out by 113 feet. Like a pop fly to shallow right that just keeps going.) Brothers gotta hug:

— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) March 31, 2026 It isn’t necessarily advisable to bust it all out at 100% on every single play, but those potentially-no-man’s-land pop ups? Heck yeah you should, and kudos to Pete Crow-Armstrong for doing so:

— MLB (@MLB) March 31, 2026 Another PCA speed thing, but actually winds up a fantastic point about Nico Hoerner’s confidence and team-oriented approach:

Plus momentum steal timing by PCA. Big takeaway is the team aspect of this play. Hoerner takes the pitch with one strike knowing that PCA has a great jump & will be safe. Also speaks to Hoerner’s confidence in hitting with two strikes. Certainly Hoerner has the option to swing &… pic.twitter.com/YqVOxk6kv3

— Jerry Weinstein (@JWonCATCHING) March 30, 2026 Sure, Hoerner could’ve decided to swing, but knowing how good he is with two strikes, he could also confidently take the pitch, risk it being strike two, and letting his teammate take second base. Love at the Sun-Times for Michael Busch from his teammates, who feel like he’s quietly one of the best first basemen in the game. I concur. Busch walked twice as the leadoff man last night, and I kinda love him atop the lineup. “He was the best first baseman in baseball last year,” Pete Crow-Armstrong told the Sun-Times. “I know you still got [Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman] and [Orioles slugger Pete Alonso]. But last year, I don’t think there was a better first baseman in baseball.” The fans also appreciate Busch:

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 31, 2026 We talked about hoping the Cubs could retain him last year as a swing man/upside play – clearly they believed in him – but it’s understandable that he opted for a more sure-first starting job. If he keeps pitching well out of the DBacks rotation, he will have obviously made the right decision, and he’ll probably finally get that big multi-year contract. New Blue Jays righty Cody Ponce, who was a relatively big-ticket name coming back from Asia, suffered an apparent knee injury in his first start of the year and had to be carted off the field. I just thought this was really beautiful and impressive: @carlieartist
