Chicago Bears rookie Zavion Thomas is already bringing in the hardware.
OK, so it is just a preseason award. I don’t care. Thomas was named Pro Football Focus’ Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Bears’ Preseason Week 3 win against the Tennessee Titans.
This is what PFF’s Gordon McGuinness had to say about Thomas’ performance against the Titans:
Thomas averaged 7.00 yards per route run in the Bears’ preseason finale, showcasing his speed on a 97-yard touchdown. He caught all five of his targets for 140 yards and a score, earning a 90.6 PFF receiving grade.

I’m still marvelling at Thomas’ stat line from Preseason Week 3:

As colleague Matt Rooney wrote in his 24-Hour Rule post on Sunday, we got a good look at why the Bears’ front office thought it was necessary to use a third-round pick on Zavion Thomas. We knew that he had speed based on his posted times. Fans also knew that Thomas had explosive play-making ability. Anyone with internet access has seen his highlights by now. However, seeing them on an NFL field in a game setting felt different. It was fun, to be sure. But it truly popped off the screen. I look forward to seeing more of it when the regular season kicks off.
And so does Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Of course, Johnson doesn’t want Thomas’ preseason success to go to the rookie’s head. This is quite the clip:

“He’s had a knack for making some big plays throughout. Got sidetracked a little bit with the injury, but to get him back out there and get him a taste of real football, I thought that was huge. Don’t want all that production to go to his head necessarily. He’s still got a long way to go. And he knows that. He understands that. Coach (Antwaan) Randle El and Isaiah Ford, they’re on him constantly just to make sure he’s getting the details down that we need to have success in this offense. But this is a good start.”
Sometimes, rookies need to be reeled in before they get too far ahead of their skis. But it sounds like the coaches on staff have that under control. And it’s not as if they need to look hard for something to keep Thomas humble. His fumbling of a hand-off from quarterback Tyson Bagent led to a Bears turnover. It wasn’t costly, as it happened in a preseason game. But that is the type of attention-to-detail thing that Johnson wants cleaned up by the time games of consequence begin.
In the end, that kind of performance makes me want to fast-forward through the next two weeks and get to kickoff on Sept. 13 in Carolina. To be clear, I don’t expect Zavion Thomas to produce those types of numbers every week. That would be unfair to ask from a rookie. But the fact that there is evidence that he can be that type of threat with the ball in his hands could be enough to make defensive coordinators think twice when they see No. 81 on the field. Because they know the last thing Ben Johnson needed was another toy for his offense.
