ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Thousands of people turned out to several No Kings protests around the Rochester area Saturday.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was at Genesee Gateway Park where one of the rallies took place. Organizers told him at least 2,000 people were there.
It started with a rally and protesters kept it going with a march through nearby neighborhoods. People packed the park to take a stand against ICE and the war in Iran.
Some carried signs saying “No Justice, No Peace.” Others called for Trump’s impeachment.
People said they’re taking a stand because they want ICE out of their communities and lower gas prices. Some counter protesters showed up, but things stayed pretty peaceful.
New York State Sen. Jeremy Cooney was there to show his support. News10NBC reached out to local Republican lawmakers for comment but hasn’t heard back yet.
“Just like support my country and make sure that I participate, not just talk about it. It wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t at least put myself out there a little bit,” he said.
Genesee Gateway Park wasn’t the only place in the Rochester area where people rallied. A few hundred showed up in Gates as well.
More than 20 different community organizations took part in the protests. Organizers said the No Kings marches will constitute the single largest non-violent day of action in American history.
There were 3,200 planned demonstrations across all 50 states and several continents.
They come as President Donald Trump faces mounting criticism for the war in Iran, the price of gas and groceries and his mass deportation agenda. A national NBC News poll earlier this month found a majority of registered U.S. voters disapprove of the president’s handling of all of those issues.
Organizers continue to preach non-violence and expect demonstrators to remain peaceful against any resistance from federal agents they may encounter.
