Susan Saint James, the Emmy-winning actress known for her starring roles on Kate & Allie and McMillan & Wife, has died. She was 80.

A representative for Saint James confirmed to People that the actress died Monday, Oct. 26, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Saint James’ family remembered her for the generosity and compassion she showed both those closest to her and people she had just met.

“She never met a stranger. Every person she met became the most important person in the room at that moment,” her family said in a statement to the outlet.

Born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles in 1946 and raised in Rockford, Ill. After briefly attending Connecticut College and spending time in France, she pursued modeling in New York before heading to Hollywood in her early 20s.

Her television breakthrough came with The Name of the Game, which premiered in 1968. Saint James earned three Emmy nominations for her performance as research assistant Peggy Maxwell, winning the award for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in 1969.

She found another major television role in 1971 when she joined Rock Hudson on McMillan & Wife. Saint James played Sally McMillan, the wife of Hudson’s San Francisco police commissioner Stewart “Mac” McMillan, for five seasons and earned three more Emmy nominations.

Saint James also appeared on the big screen in films including Outlaw Blues, Love at First Bite and How to Beat the High Cost of Living.

In 1984, she returned to series television opposite Jane Curtin in the CBS sitcom Kate & Allie. The pair played divorced best friends Kate McArdle and Allie Lowell, who moved into a New York City home together with their children.

The hit series ran until 1989 and earned Saint James another two Emmy nominations.

Saint James largely stepped away from Hollywood after Kate & Allie, later explaining that she wanted her children to become the focus of her life.

“The biggest part of my retirement from films and television is because my kids are at that age now where they need to be the stars of our family. They don’t need a mother who, when she walks in a room, they get shoved out of the way. I’ve had a much more pleasant life since that star has faded,” she told the Baltimore Sun in a 1993 interview.

She later made occasional television appearances, including roles on The Drew Carey Show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Suits. Saint James received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.

Saint James married NBC executive Dick Ebersol in 1981 after the two met when she hosted Saturday Night Live. They married just 42 days after meeting. The couple endured an unimaginable tragedy in 2004 when a private plane carrying Ebersol and two of their sons crashed in Colorado. Their 14-year-old son Teddy was killed.

Saint James later devoted herself to supporting other parents who had lost children. Her family told People that after the crash, she received 27,000 letters of support and personally responded to 15,000 of them with handwritten notes.

Saint James is survived by Ebersol, her four children, Sunshine Lucas, Harmony Lucas, Charlie Ebersol and Willie Ebersol, seven grandchildren, her sister and her service dog, Lola.
