I Knew the Wind Was Wild at Wrigley Field Yesterday, But This is Nuts ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

For much of yesterday’s opener, the wind at Wrigley Field was absolutely howling in from left field, with periodic bursts that make “howling” sound gentle. Combine that with the extreme temperature drop and the rain, and it was just a really bonkers weather day at Wrigley Field.

I appreciate Mike Petriello sharing a quantifiable bit on just how bonkers it was.

In the 9th inning yesterday, in a game that was otherwise pretty much over, Ian Happ tried to start a rally by crushing a ball to left field. At 108.5 mph off the bat and 32 degrees of launch angle, when you pull a ball like that, it isn’t just a no-doubter homer, it’s usually a titanic shot. We’re talking 400+ feet.

Except Happ’s blast DIDN’T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE WARNING TRACK:

Since 2024, there have been 27 batted balls hit between 108-109 mph at a 32° LA.25 of those 27 went for HR and they averaged 419 ft.Yesterday, Ian Happ hit a ball 108.5 mph at a 32° LA, but it only went 320 ft. The wind was not friendly at Wrigley on Opening Day. pic.twitter.com/9Scxckt525

(I checked the plots, and the only other one like that to not go out was to dead center field in a cavernous park, in case you were curious.)

So, how is it possible that Happ’s blast wound up a not-all-that-deep routine fly ball? I mean, you already know the answer – the wind at Wrigley Field, of course – but I had no clue just how un-possible it was until Petriello shared this:

My word. On a weather neutral day, that ball would’ve been expected to go 435(!) feet, but the wind being so extreme cost it 113(!!!) feet of distance.

Now just imagine if the wind had been blowing out! Would the ball have gone 500 feet?!

Anyway, it’s just a funny thing, given that the Cubs were going to lose that game anyway. What you don’t want to see is something bonkers like that happen in a game the Cubs are trailing by one, for example. Because, you know, we have seen that before.
