The news of UNC moving on from men’s basketball head coach Hubert Davis sent shockwaves Tuesday night across the college basketball landscape — and plenty of Tar Heel fans’ circles.
Days after UNC’s first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, reporting around Davis’ future being murky led to plenty of online speculation. The athletic department’s announcement ramped up reactions even further, as fans and members of the Carolina family took to social media to share their reactions.
Davis led the men’s basketball program for five seasons as its head coach, but served as an assistant coach since 2012 and played for the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1992. As such, the news of his dismissal led to several players, both past and present, sharing their gratitude to their former coach. Among those from the 2025-26 roster were Seth Trimble, Caleb Wilson, Derek Dixon, Zayden High and Isiah Denis.
Thank you for everything Coach Davis, one of the best men and coaches in my life.

Many Tar Heel fans also shared their own reactions to the news. Some fans bemoaned the decision while others celebrated — but the majority of posts in the immediate aftermath shared more mixed emotions. In general the sense was an outpouring of support and gratitude toward Davis for his tenure and representation of UNC, with some fans sharing their favorite moments from the past 5 years and others sharing personal stories about interactions with the longtime Tar Heel.
Moving on from Hubert is 100% the right move, and I’m excited to see who takes over in Chapel Hill.
With that said, you won’t see me cheering that he’s gone. I’m sad that it didn’t work out for him. Few people love UNC more than Hubert Davis.

The 2022 season cemented Hubert Davis’ positive legacy as head coach.
However, hard to overcome these numbers:
125-54 overall, 28th in D1
19-24 vs AP Top 25
28-47 vs Quad 1
2 Rd of 64 losses
1 missed tournament
Ended season on 3-game losing streak, first time since 1970

Nothing but love ?
Championship on Roy’s bench, ended the war against Duke, retired Coach K (twice).
Right time to move on, but he shall dine in the halls of Valhalla (Lenoir) forever.

In all honesty, this hurts. Hubert Davis poured his heart and soul into UNC basketball. A program he loved dearly. Sad to see it end this way. Thank you, Coach Davis. You've earned your rightful place in Tar Heel history. #GoHeels pic.twitter.com/Jg8VtcOKWB

I just feel sad. I wanted it to be Hubert. I think everyone wanted it to be Hubert. And the cards have been stacked against him in so many ways I could talk to you about when you have 2 free hours. But this had to change and what a massive change it’s gonna be.

So much negativity (right or wrong) out there regarding this situation so if you’re looking for that you can certainly find it if that’s what you’re seeking, but just want to offer some positive memories here from the HD era. ⬇️

Never forget this Hubert Davis moment from 2022.
Sure, we need a better coach, but couldn’t have asked for a better man.
Thanks for everything, Hubert. ? #GoHeels pic.twitter.com/p7j7PRxR4k

A note on Hubert Davis and #UNC.
I was at UNC BBall camp in 2012, Hubert Davis’ first offseason as an assistant.
One evening, I heard someone walk past my door in Granville. I poked my head out and made eye contact with Hubert down the hall and quickly closed the door.
Hubert…

While I fully believe this is the right move, this still hurts to see. And knowing all the “fans” that have been or will say nasty things about him following this makes it worse. Truly wanted him to succeed at Carolina and thought he would. Still rooting for him ? t.co/6pHQIq1ZVf

Opinions on this decision aside, I really, really wanted this to work out. I’m sad it didn’t. HD is one of the best humans I’ve ever met. Now that it’s over, I hope people can take a step back and respect him as a person who loves Carolina and be grateful for the big moments ? t.co/xcaTVLp0BQ

Now that this is official I can tell my HD story.
My mom wrote him a handwritten letter every year at the end of the season thanking him for being the coach and how much she loves the team.
He wrote back every single time. t.co/fG3C0GS22O

I LOVE Hubert. Worked his Christian Basketball Camp for 12 summers. Stayed in his home. Has written letters of recommendation. Gave his heart & soul. Won’t find better representative of Carolina Basketball anywhere & also won two biggest/most impactful games in Carolina history. t.co/pjH31sFfwA

Hubert took his share of heat over the years, some of it fair and some of it not, but he gave everything he had and did it with the kind of honor and class that Dean Smith and Roy Williams built this program on. Hubert Davis is a Tar Heel legend. Now and forever.

The search to replace Davis begins immediately — especially in the age of the transfer portal in college basketball. Many Carolina fans posted about their expectations for what kind of standard Davis’ successor should follow and the importance of their beloved program.
Dear future North Carolina Men’s Basketball Head Coach,
This is a prime opportunity, but a high stakes job.
The standard remains the standard.
It will never be compromised.
Come ready. Stay elite.
We want relentless excellence.
Cordially,

The entire country is talking about UNC right now…so don’t act like UNC is a nobody.
Coaching changes happening all over the country the last few days but all eyes are on fixed Chapel Hill.
That’s called relevance.
