Feeling proud of your choice to live in San Diego County? You should – it might mean you live a little longer.

County residents are living to the age of 81.5 years, according to data released Thursday by San Diego County’s Community Health Statistics Unit. That’s a hair longer than other Californians and two years longer than the average American.

A child born in San Diego in 2024 is expected to live to that ripe old age, continuing a long-term trend of improved health outcomes across the county – though a person’s life expectancy also depends on what community he or she lives in and their ethnic background.

The national average life expectancy is 79 years, and California’s average is 81.2 years.

The county’s women continue to outpace the men as far as longevity, reaching the age of 84 compared to 79 for men. Among racial and ethnic groups, Asian residents had the longest life expectancy at 87.6 years, while Black residents had the shortest at 75.2 years.

“While life expectancy increasing is a trend in the right direction, we continue to see significant disparities across the county by geography, sex, race or ethnicity,” said Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, the county’s public health officer.

As far as community ranges, Coronado’s average life expectancy ranks highest at 87.2 years, but Lemon Grove comes in the lowest at 78.7 years.

The county broke down the data by region, city and community. The average life expectancy for the North Coastal region, for instance, which includes Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista, is 84.5, while in North Inland areas, including Fallbrook, San Marcos and Poway, it falls to 82.8.

In South County, including Coronado, Chula Vista and National City, the average age tops out at 83 and in East County, including El Cajon, La Mesa and Spring Valley, it’s 79.9.

The county data shows that cancer remains the region’s leading cause of death, followed by heart disease, stroke, unintentional injuries and Alzheimer’s Disease. According to the county, stroke moved to the number-three position partly because overdose deaths declined.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death nationally and in California, according to the county.

Residents can explore detailed breakdowns, by age, race, sex, geographic region and more, through an interactive dashboard.
