ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State has started a commission aiming to help workplaces, including small businesses, to adapt to the rise in artificial intelligence.
The FutureWorks Commission is set to study the impacts of AI in the workforce and advise lawmakers on potential policies that would allow workers to harness AI, rather than AI replacing jobs. A group of AI experts, workers’ advocates, and business leaders will make up the commission and advise Gov. Kathy Hochul directly, according to her office.
This comes as some studies predict that more than 30% of workers are facing significant disruption or displacement as AI use is expanding. Hochul says she’s working on a strategy to help workers embrace AI for efficiency and innovation, while reckoning with the ways it could “disrupt some of the foundations of our society.”
In addition to the commission, Empire State Development is set to launch an AI workforce development initiative. The program aims to equip low-income New Yorkers with skills in AI innovation and connect them to internships or jobs at New York tech companies.
Empire State Development will also partner with the state’s network of Entrepreneurship Assistance Centers to provide AI training to entrepreneurs and small businesses.
