ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Airports nationwide are experiencing longer TSA lines and travel delays due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. Some TSA agents are working without pay. However, the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport has not faced these challenges.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported that TSA checks at the Rochester airport are operated by a private contractor, VMD Corp. This arrangement has allowed the airport to maintain normal operations.
Airport officials said VMD Corp continues to pay its staff, preventing the long lines and flight delays seen at other airports. Travelers at the Rochester airport should not experience any changes in wait times while going through security during the shutdown.
Tom Orr, who flew in from Newark, described a different experience. “Newark was a madhouse, with, you know, getting into TSA,” Orr said. “It was long, I got there early and it took an hour and forty minutes to get through.”
Orr added, “I mean if you don’t get there early you’re going to miss your flight.”
Another traveler, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that his flight from Chicago was delayed due to staffing issues and weather.
The Greater Rochester International Airport is one of only 20 in the country that uses a TSA private contractor for security checks, according to the TSA’s website. VMD Corp complies with TSA training and uses TSA-approved equipment.
