Shota Imanaga Absolutely Dominated the Angels, Hopes Remain High ...Middle East

Cade Horton getting 21 swings and misses on 72 pitches this week was nuts. We talked about it. Just silly stuff that you really don’t see in Spring Training, and that you would love to believe was the manifestation of a guy seeing where he’s at if treats it like a “real” game, and he puts it all together like he will in the regular season.

So what would we call 25(!) swings and misses on 76 pitches? How ridiculous is that?

Because that’s what Shota Imanaga did last night against and Angels lineup of regulars:

All in all, Imanaga allowed just one hit (a solo homer) over 4.2 innings, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

It was the kind of Spring Training result that, like Horton’s, you have to hold yourself back from getting too excited about. We DESPERATELY want Shota Imanaga to put up performances like that when the bell rings, and I do love seeing it in his second-to-last Spring Training start, but we cannot assume it means a whole lot.

As always, his physical health and velocity (still up) are the things that matter the most, even during a start with so many whiffs. We know what a healthy Shota Imanaga can do in the big leagues, and we know how important he can be to this Cubs rotation in 2026. Stay healthy, stay within the normal mechanics, and hope the results therefore take care of themselves.

Of note, Imanaga said after the start that Carson Kelly was doing more game-calling and adjusting (based on hitter reactions) than had been taking place in previous spring starts (where Imanaga was calling more of his own pitches based on what he wanted to work on). That is slightly encouraging in terms of hoping these results are reflective of the actual ability he’ll take with him into the start of the regular season.
