For many, it’s the first true sign of a team’s speed, and a good indicator of who is a threat or has work to do moving forward. The Toyotas, specifically JGR, were the standout performers. They made up four of the top cars in 20-lap average, and by means of Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin, the top two 30-lap averages.
This pace, although not a perfect predictor of single lap speed, did transition to qualifying, where the manufacturer posted five of the top 7 speeds, and the entire front two rows. A feat they’ve now accomplished seven times, the last being at The Brickyard last season. Additionally, it’s the second straight Las Vegas visit in which the ‘Yotas grabbed the top 3 qualifying positions. This time with Christopher Bell topping teammates Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs, yes, Ty Gibbs, for the pole.
Starting up front is a benefit, but it doesn’t mean drivers starting further back, or even just behind the front two rows, should be counted out. The former was the early Pennzoil 400 favorite and checked back in even shorter after Saturday’s on-track action. Meanwhile, the latter is still receiving plenty of respect from sportsbooks, reopening around 10-1 and as short as 9-1 at some shops.
