ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As temperatures drop and winds pick up, many people may consider using space heaters instead of turning up the thermostat. However, with utility bills on the rise, it’s important to know the cost of running these heaters.
A 1,500-watt space heater running for eight hours uses, on average, 20 to 30 times more energy than a refrigerator. George Angevine, National Grid Energy Efficiency Program Manager, explained the financial impact.
“Over the course of a month, that translates to $77 for just one space heater,” said Angevine. “That can increase if there are a number of them plugged into the wall.”
To help reduce energy bills, consider turning down the temperature on your hot water heater to 120 degrees, washing laundry in cold water, and air drying dishes by skipping the heat dry cycle on your dishwasher.
