Together, the pair have written and starred in several sketch shows, with their most recent being Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping.

Not being a stand-up comedian himself, Mitchell admitted it was "easier" facing off with the comedians as he has experienced more comedy in situations "where no one laughs".

"You know, a show like Peep Show – no one’s laughing. And that’s no reflection on the script," he told Radio Times.

Diane Morgan

Her other notable credits include Motherland, After Life and Mandy. This year, she'll be trying not to crack a smile as she takes part in Last One Laughing UK, and she initially thought it'd be an easy task thanks to Cunk.

She told Radio Times: "Yeah, I thought, 'Look, I’ve had loads of training here.' It’s not just when you’re talking to the experts where you have to keep a straight face, it’s for the whole shoot, whatever happens. So I went in there thinking, 'This is going to be easy.' But it wasn’t!"

Romesh Ranganathan

He has been hosting The Weakest Link since 2021 after taking over from Anne Robinson, and also hosts Romesh Ranganathan's Parents' Evening alongside his mother.

"My default is to not smile. If anything, I have to consciously show a bit more enthusiasm for stuff when it’s appropriate," he told Radio Times. "I think it puts you at a slight disadvantage, because you become a target. Mel [Giedroyc] laughs at everything so it’s arguably trickier for her, but she was a hell of a competitor."

Amy Gledhill

More recently, Gledhill starred in Harlan Coben's Run Away on Netflix and has been announced as a contestant on the upcoming series of Taskmaster.

"I’d go to all his gigs, and he was terrible. That’s what gave me the confidence to try it. I was living in Leeds and booked myself into a competition in Manchester and didn’t tell anyone I was going to do it. I got right through to the final, and that was about 13 years ago."

Maisie Adam

Her other TV appearances include Celebrity MasterMind, Tipping Point and her stand-up special Appraisal, which is available to watch on Sky and NOW. She also co-hosts women's football podcast Big Kick Energy with Suzi Ruffell.

"I spend 90 per cent of my life in the giggles," Maisie said of her decision to appear on Last One Laughing. "If I’m on stage, if I hear a funny sound from the audience, and everybody else has clocked it, I can be derailed for a good five minutes. So the idea of getting to do the challenge in person was far too tempting."

Mel Giedroyc

Over the years, Giedroyc has led the UK's Eurovision coverage and participated in The Masked Singer, and now she's setting off on a brand new challenge: Last One Laughing.

"I used the power of my gurn," Giedroyc said of her tactic on the series. "I idolised Les Dawson as a child, and no one has ever gurned like Les. It involves a lower jaw often coming up above the upper jaw. I had to employ every muscle and every sinew of my face and body, and use the muscles on the side of my neck. I’ve given myself a very cheap jowl lift. I won’t be going to see the botox lady, unlike Jimmy Carr."

Alan Carr

The comedian has been at the helm of plenty of TV shows over the years, including Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow, and currently leads Alan Carr's Picture Slam and Amanda and Alan's Italian Job.

For those who watched the BBC programme, he couldn't stop giggling, so how could he possibly hold it in on a show where he categorically cannot laugh?

"I often hung around the recycling bin," he told Radio Times. "I started recycling just so that no one could see my face. And, in the worst moments, I thought about my dogs being put down, which is really grim! But, hey, it got me through some difficult moments. So thank you, Bev and Joyce, looking down from doggie heaven. I owe you one."

Gbemisola Ikumelo

She has since gone on to star in Black Ops, the Prime Video series A League of Their Own, and has performed in the theatre production Clyde's at the Donmar Warehouse.

Gbemisola told Radio Times that the hardest she has ever laughed was while filming this series, adding: "The laugh that came out of my mouth was actually quite scary, maybe because I was stifling it. I’ve accessed a new laugh, and I have many – an angry laugh, a flirty laugh, a 'when something is funny' laugh, and now a demonic laugh to add to it."

Sam Campbell

He has since relocated to the UK and in 2022, he won the top prize at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards for his Fringe show. In 2023, he appeared and won Taskmaster and eventually went on to compete in a recent Champion of Champions.

Asked if it was rather nightmarish making jokes to an audience who cannot laugh, Sam told Radio Times: "Not so much. I don’t trust comedians. These guys have got big heads and big egos, and they’re throwing them around. They’re selfish people, and I try not to be selfish. I don’t want to be seen as having tickets on myself."

Bob Mortimer

More recently, fans have enjoyed watching him star alongside Paul Whitehouse in Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

But he also has the accolade of being the inaugural champion of Last One Laughing UK, and it was no easy feat stepping back into the game.
