The Bears Will NOT Get Compensatory Draft Picks For Losing Ian Cunningham ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

WELP, the Ian Cunningham compensatory draft pick saga is over. And unfortunately, for the Chicago Bears, it ends with the team not getting picks despite losing their assistant general manager to a promotion and a new job with another team.

There was a belief from one Bears insider that there was a chance that the team could get compensatory draft picks. Bears General Manager Ryan Poles seemed to be holding out hope that an appeal to the league would result in the NFL handing over compensatory picks. Heck, even Ian Cunningham thought Chicago was entitled to getting picks for him leaving for a promotion in Atlanta. In the end, the league felt differently, and the Bears won’t be getting any compensatory picks.

I’ll choose my words carefully here.

Takes one deep breath…

That the NFL isn’t giving the Bears compensatory draft picks for losing former Assistant GM Ian Cunningham is beyond stupid. Based on the language in the league’s rules and its history in handing out compensatory picks in the past, the Bears not getting picks in this situation is nonsensical and illogical. Moving forward, this is the type of thing that creates loopholes that others will manipulate in the future. And once that happens, a rule that had good intentions because it provided opportunities for coaches and executives that otherwise wouldn’t get a fair shot or a second look will be flouted in egregious ways that I can’t even bring myself to think of at this moment.

I’m not just mad. I’m mad and disappointed. This has the potential to lead to a slippery slope of unintended consequences. And I don’t like it one bit.

As things stand now, the Chicago still has four picks in the top-90. Those selections are Nos. 25, 57, 60, and 89. Had the league awarded the Bears two compensatory picks, it could have added two more third-round selections. There is a part of me that wants the team to raise a big stink over this decision. But there is a part of me that knows there is no crying over spilled milk and that no one likes a whiner. The show goes on, and there will be bigger fish to fry this offseason. It just stinks knowing Chicago got hosed for no good reason.
