Sunday has been a busy day for the Denver Broncos ahead of NFL Free Agency and the legal negotiating period on Monday, with them focusing on taking care of several in-house players before the frenzy that is this upcoming week.

Denver Broncos re-sign TE/FB Nate Adkins on one-year deal

As it looks on Sunday, the Denver Broncos are running it back at the tight end position with Evan Engram returning to the mix in 2026, and the team deciding to re-sign Adam Trautman late on Sunday afternoon.

That wasn’t the only move at tight end as the team re-signed TE/FB Nate Adkins, as first reported by Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post.

Adkins dealt with a knee injury last season that impacted him at various points of the season, causing him to miss a total of eight games, appearing in nine total last season.

When healthy, Adkins is one of the Broncos’ best utility options as a blocking hybrid fullback and tight end option who can line up in the backfield, offset off the line of scrimmage as a wing, and as an in-line blocker.

He had six catches last season on 11 targets for 48 yards, but also had three drops, according to Pro Football Reference. Three of his six catches moved the chains for a first down, but his overall volume in the passing game was minimal.

Many folks in Broncos Country are unhappy about the Broncos’ two moves at tight end on Sunday, because it essentially shows them being content with running it back at that position with the same group of guys, while Denver didn’t get a lot of production from the position offensively last season.

As Bo Nix enters his third season in the league, he needs more help around him. The tight end position is supposed to be a security blanket option, and unfortunately, that element was nonexistent last season on a consistent basis.

Adkins was initially a restricted free agent, so Denver’s decision to bring him back isn’t a surprise, because he also offers value on special teams. Because of injuries this season, he went from playing 280 special teams snaps (59%) in 2024 to only 46 snaps (18%) in 2025.

Adkins re-signing doesn’t necessarily guarantee him a spot on the 53-man roster in 2026, and he’ll likely compete in training camp with Caleb Lohner, but the Broncos need to add another veteran, and they should draft a younger player in the first two or three rounds of this year’s NFL Draft.

We’ll see if the Broncos have any more moves at tight end up their sleeve.
