Alabama gymnastics beat the Illinois Fighting Illini 197.125-196.175 on Sunday, with Azaraya Ra-Akbar earning a perfect score.

“I think to be back-to-back competitions, travel day yesterday, we came in and really activated energy,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “I think we gained a lot from this weekend and a lot of experience.”

Rotation 1

As the away team, Alabama started on the uneven bars and Illinois started on the vault. On the uneven bars, Alabama posted a 49.7 and Illinois posted a 48.8 on the vault.

Alabama had a fantastic night on the uneven bars with several career highs. Senior Gabby Gladieux earned a career high 9.9 in the leadoff position, and senior Natalia Pawlak also earned a career high of 9.95. Freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar, the number two uneven bars worker in the country, was perfect in the anchor position and earned a 10.

These career highs led to Alabama earning a program high uneven bars rotation score.

“Bars has just been in a really incredible rhythm,” Johnston said. “They’re able to kind of play in that good to great space of really finding their edge, putting landings down, making it undeniable. I think what you see competing is a byproduct of their training.”

Ra-Akbar clinched the event title with her perfect 10.

Rotation 2

For the second rotation, the Crimson Tide was on the vault and the Illini were on the uneven bars. On the vault, Alabama posted a 49.2 and Illinois posted a 49.075 on the uneven bars. This brought the total scores to 98.9 and 97.875, respectively.

Alabama’s highest scorer on the vault was Gladieux with a 9.925. This landed Gladieux the title.

Rotation 3

Alabama was on the floor for the third rotation and Illinois was on the balance beam. The Crimson Tide posted a 49.45 on the floor to bring its total to 148.35. On the balance beam, the Illinois Illini posted a 49.15 to bring its total to 147.025.

Junior Jamison Sears made a 9.925 on the floor to mark Alabama’s highest score on the event, this clinched her the event title.

Rotation 4

Alabama was on the balance beam for the final rotation of the night, and Illinois moved to the floor. On the balance beam, the Crimson Tide posted a 48.775 and the Illini posted a 49.15 on the floor.

Alabama had a harder beam rotation after sophomore Love Birt fell on her dismount, posting a 9.5. Freshman Jasmine Cawley then wobbled on her wolf turn to post a 9.6, and sophomore Kylee Kvamme almost fell during her tumbling pass and posted a 9.675.

“I think they continued to carry pretty good momentum throughout the meet. Then on the final event, just kind of fell out of the moment,” Johnston said. “That’s something that we’re going to put a huge emphasis on this week of figuring out how to help this team compete out of passion and love and not out of fear when they go over to beam.”

Alabama’s highest beam scorer was junior Chloe LaCoursiere with a 9.875. However, this did not land LaCoursiere the title. Illinois’ Lyden Saltness took the title with a 9.9.

The all-around title went to Gladieux who posted a 39.55.
