Five questions local northern Colorado teams will answer this spring season ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

While local boys and girls basketball teams are putting a bow on the winter high school sports season by contending for state titles, spring athletes have already got the ball rolling on their season.

The last of three seasons during the high school sports calendar is always an eventful one within the local preps scene.

Here is a look at five questions that will be answered during this spring season:

1. Will a local team reclaim championship status in Class 3A baseball?

A year ago, Coal Ridge won the 3A state baseball title, defeating University in the finals and marking the first time in nine years that a Weld County team didn’t win the title.

Odds are, a local team will climb right back to the classification’s pinnacle this fall.

There is at least a trio of contenders looking to do so.

University enters this season ranked first in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 3A preseason coaches poll.

Eaton — winners of four 3A titles this decade alone — is ranked second, one spot ahead of returning state champion Coal Ridge. Resurrection Christian is fifth.

2. Can Windsor, Dayspring, Platte Valley, Highland end their baseball title futility?

While Eaton, University and Resurrection Christian each have multiple state titles over the past decade-and-a-half, other local squads are looking to break decades-long streaks of championship futility.

Some top local contenders are looking to do something they have never done by winning a state title.

Notably, Windsor and Dayspring Christian are in prime position to contend for their first state baseball titles in school history.

The Wizards are ranked second in 4A behind defending champion Golden, while the Eagles are ranked sixth in 2A.

Another top local contender, Highland, is ranked fifth in 2A. The Huskies have one state baseball title in their school’s history. They won the AA title in 1976.

Platte Valley is seventh in 2A. The Broncos also have one title in their program’s history: the Class B title in 1954.

3. Will Windsor’s girls soccer program avenge this past season’s heartbreaker?

There’s certainly no shame in being a state runner-up.

But the way the Windsor girls soccer team fell inches short in the 4A state title game a year ago was sure to leave a bitter taste in the Wizards players’ and coaches’ mouths.

After the two teams played to a 1-1 tie through two overtime periods, Windsor fell to Evergreen, which secured a 4-3 edge in a penalty kick shootout.

The Wizards led 3-1 in the shootout.

Windsor should be right back in contention for its third trip to the 4A final in five years and perhaps its second state title in program history.

The Wizards open the season ranked second in 4A behind Evergreen in CHSAA’s preseason coaches poll.

4. Can Eaton junior Delaney Reuter claim more gold?

Delaney Reuter, an Eaton junior, has made the extraordinary look ordinary during the past couple years.

In November, she claimed the 3A girls cross country state championship, defending her title from a year earlier.

That was the third individual state title of her stellar running career.

This past May, she won the girls 1,600-meter title during the 3A track and field championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Reuter enters this weekend looking to help the Reds extend their girls basketball postseason run.

But once the dust clears on the winter season, Reuter will quickly shift her focus toward perhaps winning multiple titles on the track this spring.

5. Can Severance’s boys volleyball team ascend to that upper tier?

Severance’s boys volleyball program has been on a steady rise since launching its program four years ago.

After going a combined 12-30 their first two years in 2022-23, the Silver Knights went 11-11 in ’24 before going 22-8 a year ago.

Severance also won its first playoff match in program history a year ago, advancing to the second round of the 4A state tournament before losing to eventual state champion Regis Groff.

The Silver Knights were the only team in the state tournament to take a set from the Fusion.

Now, Severance will look to not just be competitive with the top teams in the state. It hopes to become one itself.

The Silver Knights open the season ranked fourth in CHSAA’s 4A preseason coaches poll.
