Walsh made the announcement on her Instagram story saying,
“Due to illness, I have scratched my races at the Westmont Pro Series this weekend. My biggest priority is to recover quickly and continue preparing for the China Open. Good luck to everyone competing”
Walsh was entered in four events this week as the #2 seed in the 200 IM, #3 seed in the 50 breast, #4 seed in the 100 fly, and #13 seed in the 200 free. The 100 fly was scheduled to be her first event with prelims tomorrow morning.
In her announcement, Walsh spoke of her priority to recover for the China Open. Walsh is one of numerous US athletes set to travel to China later this month with the meet scheduled from March 19th-22nd at the Longgang Universiade Center Natatorium. Training partners Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass are also slated to make the trip to China.
Athletes are expected to be paid $20,000 as an appearance fee at the China Open as well as $10,000 for 1st place in each race, $8,000 for 2nd, and $6,000 for 3rd. This is much higher than at the US Pro Swim Series, athletes get $1,500, $1,000, and $500 for making the podium. Athletes are also expected to have their flights and hotels covered at the China Open.
