Pippen. Grant. Boozer.
All big names in Bulls history (Boozer less so). And all lining up for the other side tonight! Scottie Pippen’s son Scotty Pippen Jr., Horace Grant’s nephew Jerami, and Carlos Boozer’s son Cameron suited up for the rising Memphis Grizzlies in a battle of young future titans at the United Center. The Hall of Fame Scottie Pippen was actually sitting courtside to watch his point guard son take on his old team.

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) October 10, 2026Memphis’ jumbo-sized starting frontline of power forward Boozer and center Zach Edey gave their Chicago counterparts fits in the first half. Caleb Wilson in particular was stunningly tentative, not even attempting a field goal until the second quarter.
Matas Buzelis, meanwhile, looked a bit more engaged — but was waylaid by an early injury.
On Chicago Sports Network, color commentator Robbie Hummel and play-by-play analyst Wayne Randazzo supplied the call once again, as they did during the Bulls’ 124-117 Wednesday victory against the Phoenix Suns.
But the Bulls were without several soldiers — notably all three of their projected rotation centers in presumed starter Nicolas Claxton, back-up Jalen Smith (who got the starting nod Wednesday sans Claxton), and of course Zach Collins. That left undersized two-way signing Tobe Awaka, an offensive rebounding machine, and stringbean Leonard Miller to man the middle.
Understandably, Boozer and Edey feasted on the glass early in the proceedings.

A 10-2 Grizzlies start prompted a quick Tiago Splitter timeout. Awaka did what he could against the much, much bigger Edey, but he proved a formidable foe down low. He fared a bit better when Boozer was switched onto him.

— Ross Pins (@chisportsross) October 10, 2026Buddy Hield helped punctuate an 11-0 Bulls run with the team’s first made 3-pointer. Dailyn Swain capped off the run with a pair of free throws, tying up the game at 24-24. Swain played far more under control with the rock in his hands. The Grizzlies went on a field goal drought for five minutes near the end of the first quarter.
The turnover-prone Bulls let Memphis go on another early tear in the second frame. All told, Memphis went on a run to start the quarter.
Tiago Splitter opted to cross-match his starting forwards, with Buzelis occasionally put on Cameron Boozer and Wilson guarding Jaylen Wells/Jerami Grant.
Buzelis left for the Bulls’ locker room midway through the second period, after being goaded into his third personal foul by Boozer. Chicago subsequently ruled out Buzelis for the game’s second half with a right ankle injury. He had tweaked it while defending Jaylen Wells earlier in the game, but strived to play on it.
Boozer was a behemoth, while playing limited minutes. He’s been knocked for his more limited athleticism compared to Wilson, but he has a hyper-efficient scoring touch. He notched 10 points on 3-of-5 field goal shooting and 4-of-4 foul line shooting, plus four rebounds and three dimes, in just 12:22 of action. He also logged a +17 plus-minus during that span.

— NBA (@NBA) October 10, 2026Edey also feasted around the rack, scoring 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe, while pulling down five boards, in 16:10.
On the Bulls side, however, Splitter once again gave No. 15 pick Dailyn Swain the keys — and he responded with one of his most in-control games yet for Chicago, albeit with modest stats. Swain deftly navigated pick-and-roll actions and flashed enticing athleticism inside.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 10, 2026Check out his creation in this dish to a rolling Leonard Miller, where he cleverly exploited a Noa Essengue pick to create passing space.
Another really good possession between Dailyn Swain and Leonard Miller. Swain's ball handling has improved so much since Summer League. pic.twitter.com/fBswZ7o9d6
— Ross Pins (@chisportsross) October 10, 2026New Grizzlies floor-spacing big Quinten Post, poached from the aimless Golden State Warriors in restricted free agency this summer, frequently sagged way off Leonard Miller beyond the arc, allowing him to fire off some deep treys.
Memphis led by double digits, 60-50, at the halftime break. Miller had chipped in 10 points on 4-of-8 field goal shooting and eight rebounds for the Bulls of the bench. Wilson had yet to make a field goal by this point. The Grizzlies had connected on 41.5 percent of their field goals, compared to just 35.7 percent for the Bulls. Chicago outpaced Memphis nine-to-four in first-half turnovers.
The Bulls struggled to score both around the rack and from beyond 3-point range. Chicago clearly missed the steady passing of Tre Jones or the reliable rebounding and length of Nicolas Claxton — neither vet has played yet this preseason.
Caleb Woke Up in the Third Quarter
Finally, though, Caleb Wilson woke up in time for the third quarter. The rookie superstar was thoroughly in his bag during the frame, chipping in a turnaround jumper, raining down pull-up triples, and using his burst for more aggressive interior drives.
After he went an ice-cold 0-for-4 from deep against Phoenix, it was a relief to see Wilson revive his long range game.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 10, 2026New All-Star Bulls shooting guard Norman Powell also helped supercharge Chicago in the third quarter. He and Wilson showed off an appetizing two-man game. Wilson finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting in just that period

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) October 10, 2026While Noa Essengue got some run in the first quarter, $90 million man Patrick Williams didn’t make his first appearance until late in that third frame. He was the sixth man off the bench on a Bulls squad missing probably four rotation players (if we count Zach Collins, who’s never going to be healthy for long). A lot of guys are going to have to go down for him to actually earn meaningful minutes this season. He’s still just 25, but it appears Tiago Splitter hasn’t liked what he’s seen from the 2020 lottery pick.
Buoyed by Wilson and Powell, Chicago outscored Memphis 32-25 in the third frame. The Bulls suddenly trailed the Grizzlies by a single possession, 85-82, heading into the final frame.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 10, 2026The game was back-and-forth late. Sensing a possible victory, Splitter kept Wilson in till the end of the fourth frame.
Wilson made a crucial triple to keep Chicago within a possession, 102-100, with just 55 seconds remaining in regulation.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 10, 2026Some sloppy play from Walter Clayton Jr. helped Memphis blow their response possession, and Splitter called a final timeout. Wilson had the rock and attempted a 26-foot stepback triple with two seconds remaining, while being absolutely bodied by deep-bench Grizzlies defender Jahmai Mashack… only to fall way short. Grizzlies guard Javon Small iced two free throws and the loss was in the books.
In an unnecessary 31:37 of action (playing mostly against Memphis scrubs in the second half), Wilson finished with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the floor (5-of-11 from deep!) and 2-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.
Awaka was largely ineffective against the Grizzlies’ trees — but Leonard Miller picked up his slack, with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort in 22:30. Miller and Hield were Splitter’s first players off the bench. Essengue still looks incredibly raw, having scored five points on just 1-of-6 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from the foul line. He did notch a +3, albeit while playing against Memphis’ deep bench.
Miller’s superlative play in limited time (he even flashed a nifty handle in bringing the ball up from halfcourt) seems to be helping cement his status as a true-blue rotation player… and probably edging Essengue out of a consistent rotation role once everyone is back healthy around the start of the regular season.
