2026 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Boys 1A/2A State Swimming and Diving Championships

It was more gain for Bainbridge at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Boys 1A/2A State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Bainbridge defended its title from last year, outdistancing runner-up Pullman by 81 points.

Leading the way for Bainbridge was senior Carter Cox, a Xavier commit who won two individual events and was a member of two winning relay teams.

Cox won the 100 fly in 49.46, beating out defending champion and senior teammate Sota Inoue by more than three seconds. Cox later won the 100 back in 50.84. He set best times of 49.14 in the 100 fly and 50.74 in the 100 back at Winter Juniors – West in December.

Cox opened the meet with a 22.03 fly split to help Bainbridge win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:35.94. Other team members were Inoue (24.67), Ryan Rich (26.93) (22.03) and Bradley Roloff (22.31).

In the 400 free relay, Cox anchored in 48.08 to bring Bainbridge home for the win in a time of 3:16.17. Other team members were Ian Letson (50.57), Inoue (48.22) and Rich (49.30).

Bainbridge also got wins in the 200 IM from Inoue, who won in a time of 1:59.07 after finishing 2nd in the event last year, and from Rich, who successfully defended his 100 breast title in 58.70.

The other multi-event winner was South Whidbey senior Jack Hempel, who first won the 50 free in a personal best 21.33. Hempel then won the 100 free in a personal best time of 47.47.

Other event winners were:

Pullman senior Nolan Pollestad repeated as champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.89. Sehome’s Kaden Schmidt won the 1-meter diving event with 292.40 points. Fife sophomore Kale Nordyke captured the 500 free in a personal best 4:44.92 after finishing 8th in the event last year. Yakima East Valley’s team of Alex Alejo (21.83), Tyson Critchlow (23.20), James Field (23.27), and Jake Brandt (21.84) won the 200 free relay in 1:30.14.
