TEMPE — Arizona State let a 20-point halftime lead over No. 14 Kansas shrink to two points inside the final four minutes, but the Sun Devils held on for a 70-60 upset win on Tuesday.

Kansas in the first half looked the part of a team that just lost by 23 at Arizona and thought it could easily earn a bounce-back win. ASU entered the game 4-0 in Big 12 home games against opponents that had just played in Tucson the game before.

Kansas started the second half on a 19-3 run to pull within four, with Darryn Peterson’s first two made shots of the game (0 for 7 in first half) coming from deep on the back end of the scoring barrage.

Peterson had a different energy from that point on, as the star guard visibly took it upon himself to lead a comeback attempt. ASU center Massamba Diop hit two shots to answer the run, and it was a seven-point ASU lead when Peterson exited with 11:52 left in the game.

Following Bill Self’s first-half ejection, another heated moment came just 31 seconds later when Allen Mukeba was fouled hard going up for a dunk in transition. Because of follow-through on the foul, which occurred while Mukeba was in the air, it was deemed a Flagrant 1 after review.

Moe Odum’s free throws, paired with a 3 he hit on the ensuing possession, brought the lead back to double-digits at 54-42 with 11 minutes remaining. That 3 was the Sun Devils’ last bucket until he broke the drought himself with another 3 nearly four minutes later.

Odum also drew a charge on Peterson with 5:42 left for Peterson’s fourth foul of the game. The Kansas guard was pulled from the game for the time being with ASU clinging to a 57-52 lead. It was down to two points with four minutes before Pig Johnson scored on back-to-back possessions with a 3 and a finish at the rim from Odum.

Peterson was back in with 3:19 left, playing with the four fouls. He was held scoreless the rest of the way, finishing with 15 points on 18 shots in 34 minutes.

Odum and Diop were the game’s two leading scorers with 23 points and 19 points, respectively. Odum added six assists to get to one away from top five in program history for a single season, and Diop had three blocks.

ASU earned the 20-point halftime lead largely behind Diop’s hot start, with the center scoring the first seven points of the game and hitting two 3s in the first seven minutes. Odum added three 3s of his own to stretch out the lead.

Bill Self ejected in 1st half at ASU

Self was ejected late in the first half for back-to-back technical fouls after Peterson was called for an offensive foul.

Peterson was fighting through ASU guard Bryce Ford away from the ball to earn the offensive foul. The potential top NBA Draft pick had missed all five of his shot attempts at the time of the foul call and finished the half 0 for 7 from the floor.

ASU led the Jayhawks 26-16 with 6:07 left in the half following Odum’s three made free throws after Self left the floor.

It was only Self’s second ejection since he took over the Kansas program in 2003, and it came against a coach he’s 1-2 against entering the night in Bobby Hurley. Former NBA head coach Jacque Vaughn stepped in for Self, and he was later assessed his own technical foul with 43.4 seconds left in the half.

Hurley previously defeated Kansas on Dec. 10, 2017 and Dec. 22, 2018. His only loss to Self came in the teams’ first matchup as Big 12 foes last season.
