Poolesville owned the pool at the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 3A/2A/1A State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Both the Poolesville girls and boys won state championships going away, with the girls’ team finishing 73.5 points ahead of runner-up Rockville and the boys’ team 146 points ahead of runner-up Huntingtown in a meet that was filled with repeat champions in both genders.

Not only was the present great for Poolesville, but the future looks even better with a pair of freshmen claiming the only individual titles for Poolesville.

In the 100 fly, freshman Iliza Huang swam a personal best time of 58.54 to claim victory ahead of Damascus senior Samantha Hennelly, the defending champion in the event who finished with a personal best time of her own (59.20).

Later, Poolesville freshman Meera Patel won the 100 back in a personal best time of 59.04.

A veteran also recorded a win for Poolesville, with senior Lilian Congdon, a Mount Saint Mary’s commit, claiming the 100 free in a personal best of 53.20.

Poolesville also won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:40.14 behind the team of Sophie Huang, Christine Wang, Veronica Mitin and Congdon.

The individual standout of the day was Damascus junior Viona Sunjaya, who recorded a pair of repeat victories. Sunjaya successfully defended her title in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.31, and did the same in the 100 breast with a personal best time of 1:02.60.

Other event winners were:

The 200 medley relay was won by Stephen Decatur’s team of Karis Bagley (28.56), Kate Wanner (29.65), Kendall Bagley (27.72) and Macie Groves (25.49) in 1:51.42. Rockville junior Maeve Cutter repeated as champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.77. Despite not repeating in the 100 fly, Hennelly, a Monmouth commit, did earn a win in the 50 free in a personal best time of 24.68. Damascus junior Taisiya Ivanovskaya repeated as champion in the 500 free, coming in with a time of 5:07.95. In the 400 free relay, the Damascus team of Hennelly (53.64), Mikaila Erazo (55.50), Ivanovskaya (54.43) and Sunjaya (52.86) won with a time of 3:36.43.

Boys’ Recap

Poolesville controlled the meet thanks in large part to its domination of the relays, sweeping all three events.

Leading the way for Poolesville was senior Ethan Lee, who was a part of two of those relays and won the 50 free in 21.29.

Lee had a leadoff split of 21.39 for Poolesville’s team that won the 200 free relay in 1:27.97. Other team members were Christian Iavarone-Garza (22.82), Isaac Soles (22.44) and Eli Ferrara (21.31).

Later, Lee had a leadoff split of 47.39 to help Poolesville win the 400 free relay in 3:10.30. Other team members were James Lawrence (47.58), Soles (48.55) and Ferrara (46.78).

The only multi-event winner individually was Rockville senior Brig Barnett, who recorded a pair of repeat wins.

Barnett first defended his title in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.35, then won the 500 free in 4:37.75.

Other event winners were:

The Poolesville team of Brandon Tian (25.04), Iavarone-Garza (26.63), Justin Jarczynski (24.53) and Lawrence (22.77) won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.97. Soles, a junior for Poolesville, won the 200 IM in a personal best 1:56.13. La Plata junior Jackson Donnick had a personal best time of 51.09 to win the 100 fly. Landon Abelende, a senior for La Plata, claimed the 100 free in a personal best 46.87. Lawrence, a senior for Poolesville, won the 100 back in a time of 52.70. Iavarone-Garza, junior for Poolesville, won the 100 breast in a personal best of 57.85, improving on a 4th-place finish from last year. His teammate, Lee, was 2nd in a lifetime best of 58.00.
