NHL Trade Buzz: Draft Capital, Lehkonen Hurt, Centers in Demand, a Columbus Reunion? More ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We continue to sprint closer to the NHL Trade Deadline, and the rumor mill is flying right now. So let’s take a quick lap around some of the latest buzz around the league.

More draft picks are going to move this week, but what everyone in the NHL owns now is good to know. That, a significant injury in Denver, tons of smoke around big-name centers, the plans in Utah, Philadelphia and Boston and a potential reunion in Columbus? Here’s the latest NHL trade buzz!

Right out of the gate, this is a terrific resource for the coming days: Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff broke down every team’s draft situation for the coming three years as we head toward the deadline.

I broke down every team's #NHLDraft pick situation ahead of the trade deadline. Some teams like to trade them away – others need them badly.@DailyFaceoff: t.co/iSBXf0lZj9

— Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) March 3, 2026 It appears two centers — Rangers Vincent Trocheck and Blues Robert Thomas — are the two big names being thrown around the market with the most smoke right now. There have been multiple reports the Utah Mammoth are going to make a big swing before Friday’s deadline and might target Thomas. Trocheck, meanwhile, has said he doesn’t want to go to the Western Conference but the Minnesota Wld have been prominently linked to that situation. David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reports Utah has “been linked to New York Rangers centre Vincent Trocheck, Calgary Flames centre Nazem Kadri, St. Louis Blues stars Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, and others.” In an interview with NHL.com earlier this week, Utah Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong — who is rumored to be one of the more aggressive GMs in the league right now — said he thinks the action might wait until the last minute on Friday.

“[Because] it’s so tight, I think teams, if they drop four games in a row they don’t get to the record that they want, they’ve set kind of an agenda. And they’re going to wait as long as they can to make that decision. So I do think that’s why you’re seeing not as many trades so far.

“Everybody expected a big flurry of deals to be discussed during the Olympic break and presented once the Olympic break roster freeze ended earlier this week. But not much was done. So I do believe it has to do with teams waiting to see how they do in the next five or so games before choosing to adjust.”

Sticking at center, there’s increasing smoke around Elias Pettersson being moved by the Canucks at some point — either before Friday’s deadline or this coming summer. This is significant news out of Denver. The Avs lose a top player — a few days before a trade deadline they’re approaching with the best record in the NHL and with a lot of smoke around them targeting a 3C in the market.

— Guerilla Sports (@guerillasports) March 3, 2026 In an interview with NHL.com, Flyers general manager Danny Briere said the goal in Philly is to make the playoffs and try to make a run. They are not looking for rentals, however. Any moves made by the Flyers will look to impact the team now and “into the future.” Bruins general manager Don Sweeney spoke with the media on Monday and said the Bruins are going to fall more into the tinker column than buyer and/or seller. Last year they made the bold move to trade captain Brad Marchand to Florida. The Bruins enter Tuesday in the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, but rolled to an 11-2-1 record in January.

“We’re going to be a little more cautious than we have for 10 years running in terms of really being aggressive, but if there’s opportunities, we’re going to try to pursue them to improve our hockey club. Albeit we started with a plan, a painful one at that particular time, last deadline, but we’re going to explore both sides of the fence, and at the end of the day, we’re proud of our group, and we believe in them.

“We’re a really highly competitive team. These guys stick together. People question whether or not we score enough goals. We’ve had guys who have stepped up. Areas that we’ve tried to address for a while. Our defensive zone was a little more discombobulated than what you had hoped. Marco and the staff have done a really good job. The players have now adjusted. I just think the growth in our players, both on and off the ice, from a leadership standpoint, how they’re gonna play on the ice, how they’re gonna execute, how they want to play for each other is what we were trying to accomplish.”

Finally, the beat writers at The Athletic made bold predictions for the trade deadline for every team. Scott Powers’ “bold prediction” was that the Blackhawks will trade Ilya Mikheyev. That didn’t get my attention. Aaron Portzline’s prediction for the Columbus Blue Jackets did, however. Source: The Athletic
