Weld County’s dispatchers answer about 350,000 calls per year, getting people emergency help at a moment’s notice across more than 4,000 square miles.
In addition to sending police, fire or medical help, dispatchers at the Weld County Regional Communications Center help connect people with police administrative services. The center works with 43 police, fire and EMS agencies.
More than 87,000 of the calls the dispatchers field are 911 calls, with that call load expected to increase about 3-5% every year, according to the center’s director, Tina Powell.
After two years, the center has completed an interior remodel to keep up with that growth. The remodel included upgrading dispatch and call-taking consoles, improving radio communications throughout the county and ensuring dispatchers are able to help anyone who calls 911.

Doubling the space that was previously available to the center, the interior remodel cost about $5.2 million.
The remodel aimed to support the call takers as well as improve technology and overall resiliency, Powell said.
The center now has 22 dispatching consoles, more than double the amount it previously had, as well as 10 call-taking consoles.
Sitting at a dispatch console is like sitting in the cockpit of an airplane, Powell said. Workers have multiple computer monitors they are looking at, and they’re often communicating with multiple parties during a stressful situation.
When people call 911, they’re usually not in a very good spot, Weld County Commissioner Jason Maxey said. And it’s expected that the person who takes the call will help the caller through a very stressful time.

As part of the remodel, the center added break rooms, mothers’ rooms and quiet rooms.
“You can have a dispatcher who answers a call, and it’s somebody who needs CPR instructions because something has happened to their loved one,” Powell said. “And they turn around and they do it all over again. That’s just how their day goes.
Maxey said the new technology may seem insignificant from an outsider’s perspective, but it helps the dispatchers tremendously.

This means dispatchers can access what they need to more quickly and easily.
Maxey called Powell and her dispatcher team the “first first responders,” as they are the ones who get the calls and help coordinate the response efforts. He said the remodel will help the county provide better service to residents.
