As Chicago welcomes meteorological spring with a “weather whiplash” of 60-degree temperatures and rounds of snow, the latest Climate Prediction Center’s seasonal temperature outlook maps show things could remain as a bit of a roller coaster.
The National Weather Service maps, released Feb. 19, provide a “Seasonal Temperature Outlook” for the U.S. from March, April and May of 2026. According to the maps, a wide swath of the country — ranging central and southern Washington, to southern Illinois to some parts of the East Coast — is likely to see temperatures warmer than normal.
Meanwhile, upper parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota, the map showed, are more likely to see colder than average temperatures.
So where does the Chicago area land?
The map shows much of the Midwest, including Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin — along with the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast — have “equal chances” of either being colder or warmer than normal.
According to the NWS, the average high temperature for the Chicago area in March is 47 degrees, and the average low is 31.
The maps for the Chicago area however were a bit more definitive however when it comes to possible precipitation.
According to the Seasonal Precipitation Outlook for the U.S. for March, April and May, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio are all likely to get “above” normal spring precipitation. The southwest, the map showed, is expected to see below normal during that period.
Rainy week ahead
While Friday in the Chicago area will be warm, with high temperatures in the 60s, numbers will drop into the 30s over the weekend, with two rounds of snow.
By midweek next week, temperatures will bump back up into the 40s, 50s and even 60s, with daily chances for rain as the weekend nears.
