It’s 34 years after a case involving Russian spies was solved by the newly named NCIS team at Camp Pendleton. But it turns out that in 2026, it comes back with a huge cost when Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is hunted down in Alaska, where he was living peacefully, and shot in the Season 3 premiere of NCIS: Origins.
Thanks to a trick Gibbs learned as a Marine — a real thing with a little license that showrunner David J. North learned about from writer Daniel Egbert, who was a Marine — he was able to fool the shooter into thinking he was dead, but he heard them say, “One down, one to go,” and Gibbs knew it was time to return to civilization.
“Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in,” he says in the beginning of the first episode as he packs up his gear and his dog. “I know now, Lala’s [Mariel Molino] story isn’t hers alone. It’s ours. Turns out, the final chapter is still being written.”

In an exclusive interview with showrunner David J. North, the executive producer tells Parade, that the shift in the story from her story to their story came about with Harmon wanting to be a part of it.
“He’s an enormous supporter of this show,” North says of Harmon. “The fact was, it was he and Sean [Harmon] and Gina [Lucita Monreal] in the beginning, the four of us, really created this thing and figured it all out. It didn’t happen overnight. There were a lot of conversations between him and I, and Eric Christian Olsen, who’s the [new] executive producer with me. It was ongoing, sort of massaging storylines, things like that. Mark was game. He’s the biggest believer in this cast and what we’re doing. I told him that I really thought this would put our show to the next level. He said, ‘All right, let’s do it.’”

That’s what happens in the present, but in the past, the NCIS team races to rescue a kidnapped Randy (Caleb Foote), who was taken to get his password to the computer in which he had been inputting all the NCIS documentation – and secrets. Last time Randy was traumatized, he considered moving to a desk from being a field agent, but North says this time, Randy will bounce back.
“Randy is a tough guy,” North says. “I think he learned a lot in the plot you were talking about, in saying, ‘Okay, I either need to be all in in this job or all out.’ After having gone through this traumatic kidnapping, we’ll see some residual effects in him and some comments and some moments, but for the most part, he bounced back because he knows this isn’t just what he wants to do with his life; it’s who he is.”

And then there was the kiss. Gibbs (Austin Stowell) and Lala have to deal with the aftermath of their kiss that happened in the Season 2 finale, and which fans were hoping would escalate to more. But in a twist, when Lala was leaving town, she wrote Gibbs a goodbye letter in which she told him, “I trust you with my life, but not my heart,’ which slowed down the action. But all hope is not lost.

“I know that some people had their hearts ripped out, that they just wanted it to be happily ever after right there after that kiss,” North said. “But I will say, if you’re fans of Domingibbs – which so many people seem to be that talk to me, stay tuned this season, you will enjoy what you’re seeing.”
As to where Gibbs is headed in modern-day, North would only confirm, “I will tell you that he has left Alaska for the first time in six years, I believe. We are going to see Gibbs back in the lower 48. We have so many surprises in store for you. He’s going to be crossing with people from his past, which we’re very excited about.”
NCIS: Origins airs in its new timeslot on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.
