1972 Blues Anthem, Sung by a 22-Year-Old Bonnie Raitt, Named ‘Favorite Song to Cover’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Last night on The Voice, contestant Nina Howland, a 24-year-old performer from New York, sang “Love Me Like a Man.” All four coaches turned their swivel chairs. But Kelly Clarkson had the best reaction, immediately recognizing the song and exclaiming, “That’s my song!”

“That’s my favorite Bonnie Raitt song,” the three-time Grammy winner told Howland. “It sounds as if you did her live version, not even the one on her record. Pick me!”

“No, girl, I know!” Howland replied.

The Surprising History of Kelly Clarkson’s Favorite Song

On Watch What Happens Live in June 2023, when discussing the songs she most likes to cover, Clarkson named “Love Me Like a Man,” again mentioning the live version.

“The live version, it’s incredible,” she said.

The Bonnie Raitt Connection

Written by Chris Smither, “Love You Like a Man” first appeared on the singer-songwriter’s 1970 debut album, I’m a Stranger Too! The song caught Raitt’s attention before she recorded her own version two years later, changing the title to “Love Me Like a Man.”

Just 22 at the time, Raitt was a young blues singer who would eventually become a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Her version appeared on her second studio album, Give It Up, recorded in June 1972 at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, with producer Michael Cuscuna.

But Raitt didn’t simply cover Smither’s song. She adapted the lyrics, shifting them to a woman’s perspective, with the official credits listing the song as, “Chris Smither, Lyrics adapted by Bonnie Raitt.”

Smither later recalled that Raitt called him after recording the song. He asked whether she wanted him to rewrite it from a female point of view. Her response? She’d already done it herself.

“I’m not a songwriter,” she once said, but “it doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel like I wrote it myself. There is no difference whether I spread it using other people’s words or my own songs.”

That lyrical shift transformed the song into a fierce demand for an emotionally mature, equal partner, one who doesn’t rely on fragile machismo or intimidation.

Coming Full Circle

Now, decades after Raitt made “Love Me Like a Man” one of her signature songs, it’s getting even more love through Clarkson’s personal soundtrack, with Voice contestants even using it as audition leverage.

The song didn’t just earn Howland a four-chair turn; it landed her exactly where she wanted to be: Team Kelly. It made for an almost perfectly engineered full-circle moment.
