Boyd’s Tuneup, Shaw’s Learning Opportunity, A’s Efforts, Stanton’s Injuries, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I started ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ this week, and I’m really enjoying it. Glad I waited for all the episodes to be available, though, so I could binge – it’s so bite-sized that I wouldn’t want to wait week-to-week.

Matthew Boyd threw a few scoreless innings in the Cubs’ loss to the Angels (still no broadcast). He’s up to 34 pitches, and he’ll soon head out to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Do well, Matthew. Be safe. Stay healthy. Corbin Martin is one of the very interesting Cubs’ reclamation reliever options, and he made his spring debut in the game. Would’ve liked to have seen how he looked, so hopefully we’ll get that chance at some point. Matt Shaw discusses the ball he dropped on Wednesday in right center field, and there’s definitely some valuable learning here (Tribune): “That’s a ball that [Pete Crow-Armstrong] can’t see so normally without the sun, I think that’s his ball. I was a little more passive, just being like, OK, he can probably catch it. I think that was where the adjusting piece for me is, like, knowing that he is the best center fielder in baseball, but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t be aggressive towards balls because he’ll communicate and he’ll call me off. So, that was helpful for me just to be like, OK, I’m going to be super aggressive to get the ball, but if he calls it I’ll let him take it.” Nico Hoerner returned the fun video favor, narrating Ian Happ’s day:

— Isa H – Cubs Baseball Era (@Ak_IH13) February 26, 2026 The A’s are trying to make Nick Kurtz their next position player extension target after inking all of Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom, Lawrence Butler, and Jacob Wilson to long-term deals. It’s smart stuff for an A’s organization that’ll be soon moving to Las Vegas and trying to put down roots with the fan base there, and it’s potentially smart for the players, too, as they might be able to extract a bit of a premium from the A’s, given the situation. Giancarlo Stanton’s elbow pain sounds quite bad:

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) February 26, 2026 I guess that’s partly the price of being a gigantic hulk who swings it as hard as anyone in the world – think of all the stress that must put on the elbows – but you hate to see it. You hate it at the fellow human level mostly, but also just as a fan who wants to see Stanton do the things that only he can do at the plate. Maybe his body/size/style was never going to allow him to be (1) as good as he was and (2) fully healthy at the same time, but it still feels like we got robbed of a whole lot of Stanton moments over the years. He can still mash when he makes it onto the field, though – over his 281 plate appearances last year, he hit .273/.350/.594/158 wRC+, the 7th highest mark in baseball for anyone over 250 PAs. Also, while I’m on that list, good gravy did George Springer have a ridiculous year (.309/.399/.560/166 wRC+). I knew he had a bounce-back season at the plate, but somehow I missed just how extreme it was. The wRC+ was 72(!!!) points higher than the previous season, and it was all earned. His quality of contact went through the roof, thanks in part to a MASSIVE increase in swing speed (at age 35/36). People definitely need to study whatever his training regimen was ahead of the 2025 season, because I’d like to see some Cubs duplicate it! Drew Brees could wind up one of the faces of new Padres ownership if his group wins the bidding:

— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) February 26, 2026 What demonstrates it best is how extremely easy he makes the first few catches in this video look:

— Big League Digest (@BigLeagueDigest) February 25, 2026 RIP to long-time MLB umpire Bruce Froemming:

Retired MLB umpire Bruce Froemming, who called a record 11 major-league no-hitters over his 37 season career — including Milt Pappas' no-no for the Cubs in 1972 — has died at age 86. t.co/F14j1173km

— Sun-Times Sports (@suntimes_sports) February 27, 2026 Froemming was known in part around Cubs circles because he was the umpire for Milt Pappas’s no-hitter that could’ve been a perfect game:

Milt Pappas no-hitter was the most anticlimactic no-hitter in baseball history. Pappas lost the perfect game on the 27th batter and got the 28th batter Gerry Jestadt to popup to Carmen Fanzone. Pappas never forgave umpire Bruce Froemming pic.twitter.com/lkoqso69ui

— AN AMERICAN IN THE EU (@Writer53572) June 9, 2024 Good gravy, I didn’t remember how bad this was:

— WGN TV News (@WGNNews) February 27, 2026 This is funny to me because it responds to the graphic, but also because I obviously freak about the Brewers all the time:
