Missouri football’s quarterback competition is one to watch this offseason.
Three contenders for the QB1 role are on the roster for Mizzou: Ole Miss transfer Austin Simmons, returner Matt Zollers and UConn transfer Nick Evers. The first two are likely to be the main focus of this particular QB battle.
On Thursday, Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz met with reporters to, among other things, discuss the first name we mentioned, Austin Simmons. The former Ole Miss Rebel started for Lane Kiffin and Co. before an injury forced Trinidad Chambliss into the mix. Chambliss then broke out and didn’t let go of the starting role. Simmons entered the portal following the season and landed with the Tigers soon after.
Drinkkwitz said all the usual stuff head coaches say about their upcoming quarterbacks, but had a little extra to say about Simmons being a left-handed quarterback. “I don’t have a lot of history with left-handed quarterbacks. But the truth of it is, if a left-handed quarterback is playing for you, they usually turn out to be really good, because they had to overcome a lot of bias… We might have to be conscientious of that… But other than that he’s gotta go play some football, I’m sure he’s been battling that stigmatism his whole life.”
