Caltrans working to remove landslide on Highway 1 near Elk ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

Crews made progress removing debris from Highway 1 near Elk Wednesday night after a landslide caused a complete closure of the main roadway along the Mendocino Coast, the California Department of Transportation reported.

“Maintenance crews were able to open one lane to controlled emergency traffic (Wednesday) night,” James Seward of Caltrans District 1 reported Thursday morning. “The emergency project has now transitioned to Construction, and the contractor, Granite Construction, mobilized a second shift and worked through the night to accelerate repairs. K-rails are currently being installed, and the construction team anticipates reopening the site to single-lane traffic by noon Thursday).”

Caltrans initially reported around 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25 that its Manchester Maintenance crew was “working to clear a landslide on Route 1 south of Elk (PM 31.2)” and that the road was “fully closed” at that time.

Staff later reported that “Caltrans District 1 has received $2 million in emergency funding to address the landslide. A contractor has begun work to remove material from the area and will continue working overnight, (and that) an estimated time of reopening the roadway is dependent on slide activity.”

Also on Wednesday, the Ukiah Office of the California Highway Patrol reported that someone attempting to cross a flooded Highway 175 in Hopland had “became stuck. Fortunately, no injuries were reported — but this situation could have ended very differently.”

At the time, Hwy 175 was closed due to an overflowing Russian River, parts of Highway 128 remained closed due to flooding from the Navarro River, and another section of Highway 1 near Point Arena was closed due to flooding from the Garcia River.

As of Thursday morning, all highways in Mendocino County were open again with the exception of the section of Hwy 1 affected by the landslide near Elk, according to a map of closures updated by Caltrans: quickmap.dot.ca.gov/
