Day 2 Finals Results

Night Two of the men’s Big 12 Championships had some surprising finishes, particularly from the University of Utah men, who were on fire on Wednesday.

Utah, who has been led by Jonas Persson since the fall of 2022, came out swinging on Wednesday. They came into the day in 2nd place with 168 points, just 12 points behind reigning NCAA Champions and heavy meet favorites Arizona State’s 180 and two points ahead of Arizona’s 166.

The Ute men had a strong prelims session, putting three swimmers in the ‘A’ finals of both the 500 free and 200 IM. They also had five swimmers in ‘B’ finals and six swimmers in ‘C’ finals, more than ASU in both events.

They opened the meet with the top two swimmers in the 500 free ‘C’ final with Owen Carlsen (4:24.34) and Quinn Jones (4:24.59), both improving their prelims ranking of 19th and 20th respectively. From there, they took 14th in the ‘B’ final with Oskar Farkas (4:22.37). Farkas’ swim was a new personal best time dropping from the 4:26.95 he swam at this meet last year.

In the ‘A’ final, 3rd seed Nick Chirafisi and Jones Lambert had monster closing 100s for Utah, passing ASU’s Reece Grady to finish 1st and 2nd overall. Chirafisi swam 4:13.48 to drop three seconds from his previous personal best of 4:16.63 that he swam in November and four from his preseason best of 4:17.74.

Lambert was 2nd in 4:15.70, which was just over two tenths off his best of 4:15.47 from this meet last year, but was enough for the silver medal, earning Utah a ton of momentum.

In the 200 IM ‘C’ final, Kelson Flynn finished 21st in 1:47.95. In the ‘B’ final, there were four Utah swimmers. Durgan McKean, who was part of a three way tie for 8th place out of prelims before he decided to cede his spot in the ‘A’ final, finished 10th in 1:45.57, about two seconds off his lifetime best 1:43.33.

Matthew Sexton finished 12th in 1:46.11, a new personal best time by about six tenths from the 1:46.71 he swam in November of 2025. He was followed by Caleb Gallagher‘s 1:46.78 in 14th, and Cole Bettis swimming 1:47.63 to finish 16th.

In the ‘A’ final, senior Evan VanBrocklin had a huge swim to ride the momentum of his teammates, winning the event over three ASU swimmers, chasing down two of them in the final 50 yards. He touched in 1:43.80, a new lifetime best time. He dropped from his previous best 1:44.23 from November of this season, and earned his first ever NCAA invite in the event. He came into the season at 1:44.70 from last year’s Big 12 Championships, where he finished 7th overall.

Also in the ‘A’ final were his teammates Strahinja Maslo, who finished 6th in a lifetime best 1:44.92, and Finn Winkler, who swam 1:44.99 to finish 7th.

After the first two events, the University of Utah held the top spot in the overall leaderboard by 32 points with a score of 421 to ASU’s 389.

They did not score as many points in the 50 freestyle as ASU, though it would be hard to match the Sun Devils putting seven swimmers in the ‘A’ final, and after day two they sit in 2nd overall with 473 points, 145 points behind ASU’s 618 and just one point ahead of Arizona.

Last year, they finished 3rd, almost 150 points behind Arizona, but if they continue to perform the way they did on Wednesday, it could be an exciting race for 2nd place.

Men’s Scores After Night Two

ASU — 618 Utah — 473 Arizona — 472 TCU — 283 BYU — 263 Cincinnati — 228 West Virginia — 218
