Sunday morning will deliver one of the most anticipated hockey games in history — and there’s nothing hyperbolic about that statement. Even without any Blackhawks players in the game, this is going to be epic. As Pierre LeBrun tweeted on Friday night, “It has the chance to be the most-watched game in the sport’s entire history.” Coming off the 4 Nations Face-Off and the excitement that generated for the game to a macro audience, the Olympics have been nothing short of spectacular. And, with all respect to the other teams that were in it, the USA vs. Canada is what we signed up for with a gold medal on the line. I cannot wait!
NEW for @TheAthletic from Milan, one cannot overstate the stakes in Sunday’s Olympic men’s hockey gold medal game.It has the chance to be the most-watched game in the sport’s entire history, for one. Team USA and Team Canada in one of the hockey’s most significant games ever …
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 21, 2026 Unfortunately, Teuvo Teräväinen and Finland lost a tough game that will be talked about for a while because of a few calls that were/weren’t made that directly changed the complexion of the game. Finland now plays Slovakia for the bronze. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said he expects to give Teuvo a couple days off and hopefully will get him into a practice on Wednesday before the Hawks are back on the ice for a game on Thursday. With Sweden’s Olympic tournament over, assistant coach Anders Sörensen was back with the Blackhawks yesterday. The most exciting news at Blackhawks practice yesterday was Ryan Donato sharing that he and his wife welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby girl into the world on Thursday. Millie Eleanore and mom are healthy, which is awesome. Congrats to the Donato family! With the trade deadline quickly approaching, Blashill was asked about Connor Murphy‘s contributions to the Blackhawks. I appreciated his answer, which focused on his performance on the ice this season.“First off, he’s played really well. There was a time earlier in the year where he wasn’t given lots of minutes; he’s really had to earn it. He’s really done a good job of earning ice time on a consistent basis. He’s a huge reason why our kill has been really successful. He’s defended really well; he’s moved the puck well. He’s shown some scoring. He’s been physical, he’s fought. All those things are an important part of leadership.”
Blackhawks Prospect Watch
In the USHL last night, Mason West had an assist for Fargo in a 4-2 loss at Lincoln. There was only one game in the OHL for us to care about last night. Kitchener shutout Windsor 3-0. AJ Spellacy was back in the lineup for the Spits and Jack Pridham picked up an assist on the third goal for the Rangers. In the college ranks, it was great to see Václav Nestrašil back in the lineup for UMass last night. He picked up an assist and put two shots on net in a 4-0 win over New Hampshire. John Mustard scored his 13th goal of the season — with the primary assist coming from Julius Sumpf — and then added an assist of his own in a 5-2 win over Vermont.Team-high 13th of the season for Mustard! Unfortunately, the Blazers lost 3-2 in overtime. Behm is now tied for fifth in the WHL with 33 goals and is also fifth with 77 points.BLAST OFF! pic.twitter.com/uGLnz7U3Ix
