It was a memorable night for Galatasaray on Tuesday as the Turkish club thrashed Juventus 5-2 in Istanbul to put one foot in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Galatasaray trailed 2-1 at half-time after an entertaining first half, but they scored four without reply in the second period to make the most of their numerical advantage and deal Juve a historic defeat.
The early indications suggested an entertaining encounter was on the cards, though Juventus were left not knowing what had hit them as they face the prospect of being dumped out of Europe in this play-off round.
Gabriel Sara’s well-placed strike from the edge of the area put Galatasaray in front with 15 minutes played, though Juventus were level just 85 seconds later when Teun Koopmeiners struck from close range.
The Dutchman, who’d never previously scored in the Champions League, doubled his tally just past the half-hour mark with an emphatic left-footed strike, with that his first brace in Europe since October 2019 for AZ in the Europa League.
Juve retained their lead until the break, and it was a good omen given Galatasaray hadn’t won any of their previous 21 UCL matches when trailing at half-time.
But the hosts levelled quickly after the interval, Noa Lang tapping in from close range after Michele De Gregorio parried into his path.
Galatasaray restored their lead on the hour, when Darwin Sánchez glanced Sara’s wide free-kick home, and Juve’s hopes took another blow just six minutes later – Juan Cabal given his marching orders for a second booking in relatively quick succession.
From then on, it was all Galatasaray.
Lang’s second goal of the day, an easy finish after Juventus’ calamitous attempt to play out from the back, made it 4-2, before Sacha Boey wrapped things up with fine finish from a tight angle thanks to Victor Osimhen robbing Lloyd Kelly.
It was the first time in Champions League history that Juventus had conceded five times in a single game; similarly, Galatasaray’s five scored was also a UCL first for the club.
The result leaves Juventus with a mountain to climb in next week’s return leg in Turin.
