2026 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 5A State Championships
Feb. 12, 2026 Cary, N.C. SCY (25 yards) ResultsSouth Brunswick High School in North Carolina will have to make room for two new banners that have never been hung before.
For the first time, both the girls’ and boys’ swimming and diving programs at the school won state championships, doing so with relative ease at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 5A state meet.

South Brunswick was led by sophomore Peyton Stegman, who won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:55.99 and was a part of two winning relay teams.
In the 200 free relay, South Brunswick’s team of A.J. Jackson (26.34), Opai Boehmer (26.02), Phoebe Cumbee (26.98), and Stegman (24.96) prevailed in a time of 1:44.30.
South Brunswick then won the 400 free relay by the narrowest of margins. The team of Jackson (57.28), Kennedy Gordon (1:01.32), Boehmer (57.71), and Stegman (53.81) won in 3:50.12, just three one-hundredths ahead of Cedar Ridge (3:50.15).
The 200 medley relay was also a close one. The Jay M Robinson team of Peyton Letteer (30.45), Reagan Sherwood (35.21), Kara King (26.06) and Callie Copeland (25.67) won with a time of 1:57.39. Atkins was 2nd with a time of 1:57.71.
Individually, Concord senior and UNC-Wilmington commit Lily Hermans and Seaforth senior Sydney Burleigh were the big standouts.
After winning both the 50 and 100 free at last year’s 3A state meet, Hermans won both of those events this year as well in 5A. North Carolina expanded from three to six state meets this year.
Hermans first won the 50 free in 23.69, and then won the 100 free in 51.47. Both were personal best times.
Burleigh won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:05.74, and then won the 100 fly in 56.15. Burleigh won the 100 fly at the 3A state meet last year.
Other individual winners were:
Western Alamance senior Michaela Bentley won diving with 390.85 points. Croatan freshman Ella Lechene swam a personal best time of 5:18.56 to win the 500 free. Lilly Shelley, a sophomore for North Buncombe, won the 100 back in 1:02.19. Atkins freshman Ray Schambra Stevens captured the 100 breast in 1:03.82.Girls Team Standings — Top 51

South Brunswick finished 52 points ahead of Concord despite winning just one event, the 200 free relay.
The team of Oliver Boehmer (22.37), Michael Best (22.65), Jake Boehmer (22.45) and Evan Sevast (22.51) won the relay in a time of 1:29.98, dominating the field by more than four seconds..
North Lincoln won the other two relays and had two of the three individual standouts of the meet, junior Jackson Kroh and senior Aiden DeLuca.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Kroh (23.56), DeLuca (26.87), Trentyn Shanahan (24.86) and Danny DePasquale (24.39) won in a time of 1:39.68, just two one-hundredths ahead of South Brunswick.
The 400 free relay was taken by North Lincoln’s team of Kroh (46.70), Shanahan (51.69), DePasquale (55.89) and DeLuca (48.30) in 3:22.58.
The champion last year in the 100 fly at the 3A state meet, Kroh won that event again this year in a personal best time of 48.70. He later won the 100 back in 50.46.
DeLuca won the 200 IM in 1:54.17, defending the title he won at the 3A state meet in 2025. DeLuca also won the 100 breast in a personal best 58.54.
The other multi-event winner was Vincent Battaglini, a junior from Durham School. Battaglini first won the 50 free in 21.68, and then won the 100 free in 47.14. Both were personal bests.
Other individual standouts were:
West Carteret senior Sam Johnson won the 200 free in a personal best 1:42.01. Franklin senior Jonah Brant won diving with 295.50 points, although he was the only competitor in the field. Seaforth senior Colton Roberts, a Pace University commit, captured the 500 free in a personal best 4:44.27.Boys Team Standings — Top 5
