Olympic relay silver medalist Claire Weinstein has withdrawn from the 2026 Pan Pac Championships after battling viral meningitis. Weinstein revealed the diagnosis prior to last week’s US National Championships and said that she would use that meet as a test to see where she was at after only two weeks back in full training.
The Pan Pac Championships run from August 10-15 in Irvine, California, with pool swimming beginning August 12.Weinstein announced her decision late Monday evening on Instagram.

Unfortunately, I have made the decision not to race at the Pan Pacific Championships next week. This was incredibly difficult as representing my country is one of the greatest honors, however I don’t want to wear the USA cap unless I know I am prepared to race at an elite level.
3 weeks in a hospital bed really puts things into perspective and I’m just grateful that I’m able to be back in the water doing what I love again. I will never take the grind for granted and trust I will be back

At Nationals, Weinstein finished 45th in the 50 free (26.14) and 21st in the 100 free (55.45). Her best times in those events are 25.53 and 53.72, respectively.
Weinstein was scheduled to race as part of the U.S. roster at the 2026 Pan Pac Championships in the 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free.
She was the World Championships bronze medalist in the 200 free last summer and led off the silver-medal winning 800 free relay for Team USA. Options for replacements* on that relay at Pan Pacs include Torri Huske and Simone Manuel, who are already on the roster. All relays are timed finals events at Pan Pacs.
*USA Swimming confirmed that they won’t replace her on the roster because the replacement deadline has passed, so no Anna Moesch surprise appearance.
The balancing news for the American outlook is that Australia, the World Championship gold medalists from last year, will also be missing a key leg in Mollie O’Callaghan, who withdrew from Pan Pacs with a back injury. Jamie Perkins, who also swam on that finals relay, won’t make the trip to Irvine either.
Weinstein, 19, recently completed her freshman season at Cal. There she won the NCAA title in the 500 yard free. She has only raced a single long course meet since, a timed finals event on April 11 and 12.
According to the Mayo Clinic, meningitis is “an infection and swelling of the fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord.” Sometimes, meningitis can improve without treatment, but in other cases it leads to death and other long-term health complications.
A 2023 study found that all forms of meningitis (including the far more dangerous bacterial form) infect more than 2.5 million people globally each year and kill more than 250,000.
