The first finals session of the 2026 U.S. Junior National Championships is upon us, and with it the promise of more fast swimming from many of the country’s top age group swimmers.
The night will kick off with the girls’ 200 fly final, in which Caroline Mallard will look to defend her Junior National title from last summer. Mallard was the top qualifier coming out of the heats this morning, clocking the only sub-2:14 time in the field with a 2:13.71. That’s faster than the prelims time that she posted at Nationals last weekend (2:13.96), and she went on to log a time of 2:10.42 during finals at Nationals, so she looks right on par to turn in a similar performance tonight.
The girls’ 50 back promises to be a close race, with just .2 separating the top four qualifiers from this morning. Maggie Dickinson comes into the final as the top seed with a qualifying time of 28.70, while Sydney Wasylenky will be in the lane next to her after clocking 28.76 this morning. Gabia Gelumbickas is currently seeded 3rd in 28.89, while Summer Thresher sits just behind with her prelim time of 28.91.
Benjamin Jaggers heads into the boys’ 50 back final with a clear lead over the field after this morning, having posted a best time of 25.24 in the heats to hold onto his position as the top seed. The only other swimmer to go under 26 during prelims was Nico Lee, who stopped the clock in 25.94.
Only 1.5 seconds separates the whole of the top eight qualifiers in the girls’ 100 breast. Sofia Szymanowski heads into the race as the top seed with a time of 1:09.63, while Maya McCarney sits in the #8 spot with a time of 1:11.11. It is also shaping up to be a bit of a rematch from the junior final at last week’s Nationals, which saw Szymanowski place 4th and Grace Koenig-Song, the #2 qualifier this morning, take 2nd.
Ryan Coughenour turned in a massive time drop this morning in the boys’ 100 breast to take the top spot coming out of prelims, so we’ll have to see if he can continue that trajectory to stay in front of the pack tonight. He’ll face tough competition from the rest of the field, as the other seven qualifiers in the top eight all posted times in the 1:02 range this morning and just over a second separates him from 8th-place at the moment.
We’ll also see the fastest heats of the girls’ 800 free and the boys’ 1500 free swim tonight. Alex Siegel heads into the 800 as the top seed in the event and is the only one entered with a sub-8:40 time. James Darcy is the fastest seed in the 1500 with an entry time of 15:35.38, while Joey Eaddy poised to apply some pressure from his spot as the #2 seed with an entry time of 15:37.91.
