NEWARK, N.Y. — Newark-Arcadia emergency medical technicians are now wearing body cameras, becoming the third EMS agency in New York to do so.
The other agencies using body cameras are in the Town of Tonawanda and the Town of Lake George. Newark-Arcadia EMS leaders said the cameras will improve transparency, accountability, EMT safety, and patient care.
“We can actually see what happened on a call, coach providers through doing a better job the next time, or praising them for the good things that they do already,” Newark-Arcadia EMS Chief Timothy Wood said.
Newark-Arcadia EMS began using the body cameras during a trial period in early December, with the full program starting last Friday. It has not heard any negative feedback about the cameras from patients in the community.
“It’s a benefit to see that the person is being treated properly and things were done that needed to be done,” Henry Talma said.
Lisa Maggio shared that the cameras make her feel safer.
“I’d feel like I was in good hands and that there was proof backing that up just in case I was in any sort of condition where possibly there would be memory loss or conditions like that, there’s something to look back for or back to,” she said.
Maggio also mentioned that the cameras help with transparency.
“I think it keeps both parties honest, both the patient and the EMS, just so that if any allegations are brought up, it can be disproven based on that evidence,” she said.
The Newark-Arcadia EMS chief stated that camera footage would only be released with a subpoena. The EMS president noted that body cameras are becoming an industry standard and expects more agencies to adopt them.
