Hobart lacrosse ushers in new era with Stephen Brundage as head coach ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

The last three seasons, Hobart lacrosse, the only Division one spring sport in our viewing area, has finished in the bottom half of its conference, the Atlantic 10. But it’s a new day for the Statesman with a change in leadership.

“When you guys found out that he’d be taken over, what was your reaction?” I asked.

“Yeah, I was extremely fired up,” said Max Snellenburg, a senior.

“Everybody trusts him as a coach, and yeah, we were fired up,” said senior Brady Comella.

It’s safe to say Coach Stephen Brundage is well-liked.

“Very knowledgeable about the sport. So, it’s always a good time around him,” said senior David Peterkin.

These guys are used to him, and he’s used to them too, being promoted from within and first arriving on campus in 2019.

“That’s the nice part about being the head coach here, is that I didn’t go somewhere else and take over a program that was new to me,” Brundage said. “I know these guys.”

Under his watch, the Statesman’s offense has produced four top-five finishes in goals per game in the country since 2020.

“The things we preach are sharing it, trusting each other,” Snellenburg said.

“He lets us play with a ton of freedom so we’re not playing tight, we’re not playing nervous,” Peterkin said.

And now, as head coach, his vision is even clearer.

“I know how we want to play, which is fast and physical,” Brundage said. “Kind of this blue collar upstate mentality that I know that that this this program was built on.”

A program that has 16 national championships between Division III and Division II, and now at the DI level, it’s been ten years since they last won a conference championship–something these guys wanna change immediately.

“One of the first conversations we had, he’s just talking about winning and winning an A10 Championship,” Peterkin said.

“Just get better and better every game, every week, and just be the best team we can be in May to be able to compete for the A10,” Comella said.

So, a familiar face with a fresh vision.

“Maintaining a balance of hard work and excitement is really important to me,” Brundage said. “It’s how I want to coach these guys, and I want these guys to feel that.”

Brundage is from Camillus and previously served as an assistant coach at Drexel, Princeton, and Marquette.

The Statesmen will get their season started on Saturday against Canisius at home with a scheduled start of 1 pm.
