Are the Bulls Getting Desperate for a Superstar? And is Zion Williamson That Guy? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Count with me, just two days to go until the trade deadline. And with it comes all the allure and perceived value of expiring contracts that the Chicago Bulls are suddenly boasting. The desperation is starting to seep through, and as a result, the calls for Zion Williamson are getting louder.

According to Joe Cowley, the Bulls recently made another call to the Pelicans, expressing interest in former No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson. Chicago has reportedly been in consistent contact with the Pels over the last couple of weeks, inquiring about both Zion and Yves Missi. New Orleans hasn’t shown much interest in “selling”, at least not to the Bulls, but that hasn’t stopped Chicago from being relentless and almost single-minded in its pursuit of the former Duke Blue Devil.

Why Are the Bulls Hung Up on Zion Williamson?

The Bulls have a superstar problem — more specifically: they don’t have one. Derrick Rose, the man whose name now hangs in the rafters at the United Center and the last real superstar this team had, has pointed out that painfully obvious truth as well.

Zion Williamson is in the middle of one of his best—and healthiest—seasons since entering the league. He was one of the most hyped prospects the NBA has ever seen, and yet we’ve never truly watched him spread his wings because of the sheer amount of time he’s spent injured.

This season, he’s played 35 games and has suited up for 25 straight—tied for the longest consecutive stretch of his career and a mark he’ll comfortably pass. He’s still a bully in the paint, a steamrolling train that can really only be stopped with a prayer. And he’s just 25 years old — not even in his athletic prime yet — with things finally clicking at the right time.

The Bulls want that. Indeed, they need that.

The Bulls see something fun brewing with Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis, and they want a dude — someone like Zion. They were impressed by what the Indiana Pacers pulled off last season and want to replicate that blueprint, with Williamson playing a Pascal Siakam–type role as the centerpiece.

Zion plays for a Pelicans team that feels poorly run. They own the second-worst record in the Western Conference, yet don’t even have their own pick to benefit from the misery. On paper, the roster is stacked, but injuries and poor fit have derailed everything. There is a promising core in Trey Murphy, Jeremiah Fears, Derik Queen, and Yves Missi, but I’m not sure Zion’s invitation to that party, much like his contract, is fully guaranteed.

He still holds immense value and could give New Orleans exactly what it needs to properly build around those names.

And yet, there’s intrigue. The Pelicans have never truly had Zion available long enough to understand what the ceiling looks like with him as the unquestioned star. That mystery is probably why Chicago is not being able to break through. That, and the fact that expiring contracts don’t exactly move the needle for a team that could cut Zion with minimal penalty if things ever got truly desperate.

The funniest part of all this is that the Bulls are also being linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo. In fact, they’re the betting favorites to land him. He’s already a superstar, still has at least four or five elite years left, and has even expressed interest in Chicago. Yet somehow, reports of the Bulls actively pursuing him are basically nonexistent.

And that’s kind of where the issue lies.

It feels like the Bulls are undervaluing what Zion is actually worth while overvaluing what they already have, convincing themselves they’re throwing great offers around left and right. But this isn’t the overweight Zion from years past. There’s a reason Chicago is salivating, and it’s because his price tag is only going up.

If the Bulls are serious about making one big move, I’d rather see them float their best offer to Milwaukee first—before the Pelicans fully take advantage of Chicago’s desperation and growing obsession with Zion Williamson.
