ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that New York law enforcement will not cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, taking a stand against the Trump administration.
In a news conference, Hochul offered support to Minnesota officials who are also opposing immigration enforcement. She also introduced a new legislation, “Local Cops, Local Crimes Act.”
This bill would ban 287(g) agreements between ICE and local law enforcement. Those agreements let ICE deputize local police, let local police enforce civil immigration law, and let ICE use local jails and resources for immigration detention.
“Local police will continue to help federal agents track down violent criminals. This never has changed, it never will change,” Hochul said. “But what I don’t want them doing, and what they no longer will do, is aid armed forces who they think can occupy our streets, scare our children, round up our neighbors.”
Rep. Claudia Tenney posted on social media about Hochul’s new proposed bill, saying “her leadership has failed our law enforcement and failed New Yorkers.”
In a statement, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said “As a Sanctuary City, Rochester has prohibited the use of City resources to enforce federal civil immigration statutes for nearly four decades. These assurances help us build trust and improve public safety by allowing members of our immigrant community to report crimes and access critical services without fear. I applaud Gov. Kathy Hochul for taking action to extend these protections statewide and standing ROC solid for all New Yorkers.”
Hochul says 14 New York law enforcement agencies across nine counties have signed 287(g) agreements. To learn more about the proposed bill, click here.
