Strong defense and effort from Cody lead Alabama to 68-53 win over Georgia ...Middle East

No. 24 Alabama women’s basketball went on the road Thursday night and took down the No. 23 Georgia Bulldogs 68-53.

“Just loved our grittiness, loved our toughness,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “It was a great road win against a good team.”

The win marked the fifth time in a row the Crimson Tide has taken down the Bulldogs, which is the longest such streak in program history. Both teams came in at 18-3, and Alabama is now 19-3 and 5-3 in SEC play.

Curry’s squad trailed by 8 after the first quarter, 20-12, before coming to life in the second and putting together one of its best defensive quarters of the season by holding Georgia to 8. With that turnaround, the Crimson Tide led by 3 at the half, 31-28.

“I am proud of our defense and the way we rebounded the ball,” Curry said, applauding how her team was able to “get some easy baskets in transition because we got some stops.”

Forward Essence Cody, who just recently came back from injury and has been on a minutes restriction, led the way for the team in the first half with 10 points. Guards Ta’Mia Scott and Karly Weathers both had 5.

The third quarter was tight the entire way. Scott was the catalyst for Alabama’s offensive success, scoring 8 of the team’s 22 points in the period on 3/3 shooting from the field and 2/2 from 3. Overall, the Crimson Tide shot 70% from the field and won the quarter by 3, taking a 6-point advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Scoring slowed to a crawl in the final frame, as the teams combined for less points than Alabama scored by itself in the third. When it mattered most, it was the Crimson Tide’s effort on the defensive end of the floor that won the day.

“It’s just an effort category,” Curry said. “When you can pack your defense and rebound like that on the road, you give yourself a chance.” The team outrebounded Georgia 23-14 in the second half and 16-7 in the fourth alone.

Georgia forward Mia Woolfolk — who led her team with 13 points — made a layup with 6:11 to bring the score to 60-52 in favor of Alabama, but from there it never got closer. The Crimson Tide maintained the lead through solid defense, allowed only 6 points in the quarter and ultimately came away with the double-digit win.

Despite not starting, Cody led Alabama in scoring with 16 points and played 25 minutes. Fans are sure to be encouraged by her progress in returning.

The Crimson Tide will next play against No. 6 LSU on Sunday in Baton Rouge. Tipoff is at 11:00 a.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network.
