Legendary Notre Dame Football Coach Lou Holtz Enters Hospice Care: Report ...Middle East

News by : (Us magazine) -

Lou Holtz, the legendary football coach best known for his tenure at Notre Dame, has reportedly been placed in hospice care.

A source close to the family told ABC57 in South Bend, Indiana, home of Notre Dame, about Holtz’s condition.

Holtz led the Fighting Irish to a consensus national championship after an undefeated season in 1988. He coached Notre Dame for 11 seasons from 1986 to 1996.

After retiring from coaching and working as an analyst for CBS Sports for two years, Holtz came out of retirement and coached at the University of South Carolina for six seasons from 1999 to 2004.

Holtz’s collegiate coaching career also included tenures at William & Mary, where he got his start in 1969, NC State, Arkansas and Minnesota.

He coached the NFL’s New York Jets for one season in 1976, amassing a 3-10 record.

“God did not put Lou Holtz on this earth to coach in the pros,” he said upon his departure.

After retiring from coaching for good, Holtz made regular appearances on ESPN. Holtz left the network in 2015 under a “mutual agreement,” according to Sports Illustrated.

Holtz was married to his wife, Beth Holtz, from 1961 to 2020, when she died of cancer.

The couple shared four children: daughters Elizabeth and Luanne, and sons Kevin and Skip, the latter of whom followed in his father’s coaching footsteps with a lengthy resume that included two seasons as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator and head coaching positions at UConn, East Carolina, South Florida and Louisiana Tech.

Skip shared a picture on social media of himself and his father to celebrate his birthday earlier this month.

“Happy Birthday Dad! 89 years young!” Skip wrote via X.

Sports broadcasting legend Tim Brando said he exchanged “encouraging” texts with Skip, 61, on Friday, January 30, and said the Holtz family is aware of the prayers they are “receiving around the country and world.”

“He did add, ‘He’s still fighting the fight,’” Brando, 69, wrote. “I’d expect nothing less from Lou.”

Brando first addressed the news about Holtz on Thursday, January 29, sharing via X, “Oh at some point I think we all knew we’d be lucky to hold on to Lou and legends like him much longer.”

“So many we’ve looked up to and many I had the honor and privilege of not only covering, but working alongside eventually head to their next life of eternal glory,” Brando said.

He added, “His beloved wife Beth awaits. ? Coach Holtz has always been a National Treasure. ?”

Holtz was still firing off hot takes as recently as September 2025, when he criticized the Notre Dame fanbase after a season-opening loss to the University of Miami during an appearance on the “Don’t at Me” podcast.

“I’ll tell you what I was shocked at,” Holtz said. “I was shocked at how many Miami fans were at that game. That whole stadium was orange and that’s unusual. When we went on the road half of the stadium was Notre Dame but I had trouble finding a lot of Notre Dame fans there.”
